NATIONAL ACADEMY OFSCIENCES 2101 CONSTITUTION AVENUE WASHINGTON. D.C. 20418 OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT September 7, 1982 Dr. Eugene Garfield Institute for Scientific Information 3501 Market Street University City Science Center Philadelphia, PA 19104 Dear Dr. Garfield: Thank you for your letter of August 19 and your request that the title of the Luck Award be altered. LATE, At its inception, this prize was designated as the James Murray Luck Award and, with some considerable questioning, was so approved by vote of the Academy's Council. As a matter of fact, the use of the name of a living person was contrary to Academy practice and has since presented some difficulty. It seems to me quite appropriate to follow your suggestion and the pattern established for other Academy awards. Therefore, I will recommend to the Council that it approve the designation of this prize henceforth as the National Acadeny of Sciences Award for Excellence in Scientific Reviewing, established by Annual Reviews and the Institute for Scientific Information in honor of James Murray Luck. I appreciate your interest in the Academy's award program and am pleased to have your comments.
