Gentlemen:

The following passage from Bentley Glass's response to
my call for suggestions re procedure points up nicely the
thought behind my own suggestion (November 30) as to how we
might get started.

"We could indeed waste a great deal of time dis-
cussing criteria and procedures. For this very
first year of the Committee's award I should like
to propose a shortcut, much in line with your
suggestions in your second round robin letter,
namely, to nominate personally someone who is so
outstanding in this endeavor that we might search
a thousand years and not find a better. In my
thirty-three years as an editor of the Quarterly
Review of Biology, not to mention the Survey of \
Biological Progress and a good many other editorial Q\
responsibilities involving the effort to get and
publish really first-rate, creative, scholarly .
reviews, I have no trouble at all in naming ,
the person I think is a model in this respect:"

 

 

I'll terminate the quote here, in the interest of having
some independence in our initial proposals.

If by mid-January we have in hand a few candidates who
seem to fall in somewhat the same class, I'll arrange to have
you polled to see if all or most of us can get together
briefly to conclude our assignment.
