Por THE ROCKEFELLER UNIVERSIT 1230 YORK AVENUE NEW YORK, NY 1002 August 24, 1988 JOSHUA LEDERBERG PRESIDENT Dr. Richard A. Rifkind Chairman Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research 1275 York Avenue New York, New York 10021 d As you may know, in 1976 Philip Levine set up a lecture fund here at Rockefeller to provide honoraria and expenses for periodic lectures on the pathogenesis of cancer. He designated that the lecture, which was to be given at Rockefeller, should be under the joint auspices of The Rockefeller University, The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center and Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research. Such a lecture was given three times; the speakers were S. Jonathan Singer (1977), Michael Potter (1978) and Cesar Milstein (1979). Dear Dick: There has been a long hiatus since the last lecture. It is time to reactive it. I am writing this letter to you and Drs. David Skinner and Thomas Shires. May I ask you to designate someone (perhaps Charlotte Cunningham-Rundles) who would be charged with gathering suggestions for lecturers from within your institution? I plan to ask Tom Shires and David Skinner to do the same. Then, if your "representative" could call Peter Model, head of The Rockefeller Lecture Committee, then Peter and those two "representatives" could talk over the suggestions. Cynthia Greenleaf, who has recently come to The Rockefeller University as Associate Vice President for Administration, is helping Peter with the work of the Lecture Committee. She is available to help in the planning for the Levine Lecture. Her telephone number is 570~8073 if you or your chosen representative would care to call her. More generally, I have asked Ms. Green- leaf to be available to help with ad hoc matters that call for interinstitutional coordination. Please feel free to call on her at anytime. Yours sincerely, pe fora bole ome cc: Peter Model shua Lederberg Cynthia Greenleaf
