Ph.D. Dean of School of Medicine & Dentistry Director of Medical Center 275-3407 oust ELLER Ne MAR.11 1981 March 7, 1981 Mr. Joshua Lederberg President Rockefeller University 1230 York Avenue New York, New York 10021 Dear Josh: Y I write to invite you to join the Scientific Advisory Committee for the Wilmot Fellowship Program at the University of Rochester. Mr. James P. Wilmot, a distinguished industrialist in Rochester, has bequeathed the University of Rochester a substantial endowment for a training program in cancer research. Mr. Wilmot specifically designated his funds for the training of physicians in the prevention, diagnosis and cure of cancer. We anticipate that 24 to 28 fellows will be supported through this mechanism with stipends varying from $21,000 - $25,000 per year. A committee at the University of Rochester will screen the applications for these fellowships from individuals who have finished a portion of their residency training at this institution or at other instititions throughout the country. The external advisory committee is designed to aid the dean in the final selection of candidates. I anticipate that this effort would not consume more than a day of your time per year. Nevertheless, the advice of distinguished individuals in the field is most important as we initiate this novel training program. The University of Rochester would be pleased to compensate you for your travel and provide an honorarium of $500 per day for these efforts. I shall be calling you to discuss this with you personally and trust that it will be possible for you to aid me in estab- lishing this important program. Thank you. Sincerely, Lidl FEY:eb
