Kw p/ MEMORANDUM GOCKEFELLER OM. . f ete “PS october 10, 19d , WET.14 1980 * TO: FILES etoner ' Qe, rome wn a J SE OF THe PRES FROM: E. C. WHITEHEAD At 8:00 o'clock on Thursday, October 9th, Dr. Lewis Thomas, Dr. David Baltimore and myself met with Dr. Dan Tostesen, Dean of the Harvard Medical School, for dinner. Dan was very encouraging. We brought him up-to-date on the current activities of the Institute. We discussed at great length the relation of Senior Faculty to the Harvard Medical School. I was a little confused at the conversation, but I think it could be summed up as follows: (1) Harvard would insist that they go through their normal search procedures for Senior Faculty that had joint appointments to the Medical School and the Institute. This is tantamount to saying that Harvard Medical School would have virtual power of selection. (2) They would expect that the vast majority of Senior Faculty would have such joint appointments. (3) There might be an occasional exception where for one reason or other, a Senior Faculty member might not have a joint appointment. In which case, the Whitehead Institute could appoint such a person without the approval of the Medical School. However, it was quite clear that this would be a very rare exception. I discussed the fact that this might be a constraint on the flexibility of the Institute. However, David felt that he could live with it. The bottom line, I believe, is that from the | standpoint of the Board of the Institute, it is a fine quality control precaution. The problem would be for the Director but Since David didn't seem to mind, it is acceptable. I also have the distinct impression that this procedure only pertained to Senior staff. I would be glad if either David or Lew has a different impression, they would please advise. As far as site is concerned, as I remembered, there are three absolute possibilities and several others that are some- what less "doable". They are: (1) A parking lot between Buildings B&C (?) of the Medical School. (2) Land presently owned by the Farber Institute which is either vacant or occupied by buildings that could come down. (3) The site of the old Lying-in Hospital which has been or will shortly be vacant. Page 2 October 10, 1980 In addition, there is a possibility for some land presently occupied by the old Brigham Hospital and one or two other possibilities that I don't remember. Dan felt that it was not impossible that one of the Departments of the Medical School could reside in our Institute with the faculty of the Institute being the nucleus of the Department. Later, David informed us that this was undoubtedly the Genetics Department for which they had been trying to recruit him for some time. All in all, Dan concluded the meeting by asking how serious we were and we, I believe, reassured him. I told him, in fact, that we had to make a decision by the first of the year. He is going to have a meeting with David in the very near future to try to nail down more definite plans. All in all, I believe the three of us, Drs. Thomas, Baltimore and myself felt very encouraged by this meeting and it appears at the moment, that the Harvard affiliation is very close to being a favored location.
