THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN AUSTIN, TEXAS 78712 The Cell Research Institute May 30, 1978 Mr. P. E. Haggerty 5455 Northbrook Drive Dallas, TX 75220 Dear Mr, Haggerty: Thank you for bothering to reply to my notes at all. TI am now back from Leningrad--a venture which I can only put down to a very mixed experience, It turned out to be more of a state visit than a lectureship and I had some unusual opportunities. Life science-wise, the situation is pretty pathetic, colored by a national paranoia and the tremendous cost of years of wrong track genetics. Nationally or internationally, my guess is the revolution is over, supported only by masses of paper; * but I think the situation is more dangerous than ever. This time, though treated way above the crowd, I fell with a "Let's annihilate all Americans here and now" contingent. Sixty years of Mr. Lenin has extracted a terrible toll. Back to things at hand, let me comment once more on Joshua Lederberg's appointment. My deep admiration for Joshua is matched only by a deter- * mination to go one step beyond where he managed to go in the life sciences field. That is no mean task but it has the strength of Rockefeller to back it. When I get squared away, I shall return to the Rockefeller supporting fold. Please feel free to call upon me at any time. With very best wishes. ' Cordi lly at | i ‘A ‘ t are, Pa Dena Lhe pup hQ ude, he was AB ned, wae totale etstep. Fortean ? Rateheblr.? 4/7 ? Mo WR at Ui bel.
