Dear Josh,

I'm sorry I was unable to reach you by telephone when I called two weeks
ago.

I would like to nominate you for a position on the Scientific Advisory
Council for the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research.

The Province of Alberta has granted $300 million. The interest on the
principle is to be used for biomedical research at the University of Alberta
and the University of Calgary.

The members of the Scientific Advisory Council wil] have a great impact
on how these funds will be spent--whether for research professorships, fellow-
ships, or the setting up of entire departments or divisions, and which kinds
of professorships and departments.

I was told that the expected time spent on the Council would amount to
about 5 or 6 days a year for two years. Since this would be at the beginning
of the program it could be an interesting venture for you. Also, we have ~
found Alberta an exciting place to live, and I think you would really enjoy
visiting here.
