Dear Josh:

In rashly promising to come and get your stocks the other day, I was
failing to take into account one major obstacle. Ever since undergoing major
abdominal surgery last fall, I have had a bad back. This was totally unnecessary
and due to a surgeon's sending me home alone too soon. I have been attempting
to get back into shape again by taking exercises under the direction of the
physical therapists here, but progress is disappointingly slow.

As a result of this problem, I have not yet driven a car for any appreciable
distance. I am reluctant to jeopardize the gains that I have made by driving
in an unfamiliar vehicle all the way to New York at this time.

Surely, the President of Rockefeller University can dispatch one of his

—— minions to New Haven with a shipment of valuable strains! I am sorry not to

be more helpful.
