TELEPHONE 347-1511 AFFILIATED WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE AND DIRECTOR: PROFESSOR G. J. V. NOSSAL, C.B.E., F.aA.A. THE ROYAL MELBOURNE HOSPITAL . . ee oth May, 1972 Professor Joshua Lederberg, Department of Genetics, Stanford University Medical Center, STANFORD, California 94305, U.S.A. Dear Joshua, Many thanks for your frank and friendly letter of April 27th. All of us understand the desperate problem of competing priorities, and appreciate your willingness to seriously consider the possibility of an Australian trip. Our pattern has been to alternate overseas and Australian Rubbo orators - this year it is Roger Stanier and next year it will be Frank Fenner. We shall have to move on an alternative lecturer for 1974 within six months or so, and I believe the schedule that you have presented for us suggests you will not be in a position to have totally made up your mind by six months from now, so I suspect we would be more realistic in planning for a visit by you around 1976. Needless to say, we will try to fit in with your plans as much as we can, as and when they mature. The prospect of welcoming you at some defined time in the futhre is most exciting, and Ido hope you will regard our invitation as an essentially "open" one, to be activated entirely at your discretion. There will be some constraints on us, but given adequate advance notice, we should be in a position to work out something satisfactory. Warm regards to all my friends in your Department and at the University generally. Yours, as ever UA? c-9 ‘7¥Ss0v A
