Alway, Dean Stanford University chool of Medicine Stanford, valifornia Dear Doctor Alway: I should like to report to you that your and Ur. Lederberg's request for a grant-ineaid of the newly formed Genetics Lepartment at Stanford was further considered by the Board of Scientific Advisers at its meeting on October 16, 1959. The very adequate materials received since the last meetings of the MYoard were in hand for this meeting. I regret to say that the soard was unable to recommend favorable action to the Hoard of Managers on the request. I may report that the Joard as a whole was very sympathetic to the exciting changes that are taking place at Stanford. iiowever, in its opinion, the rund is not in a position at present to provide effeqtive support for such a large, general program. Please be assured that this Fund stands ready to give careful consideration to any requests for specific research projects in cancer research that may arise in the Vepartment of Uenetics or other -epartiuents of the medical school, Sincerely yours, COX. pools L.
