Dear Josh,

We have just begun a new lecture series at
Cornell University Medical College, under the aegis of the
Stanton Griffis Distinguished Medical Professor. The joint
organizers are myself and Dr. June Goodfield of Rockefeller
University.

The series will consist of lectures and meetings
held once every two months throughout the year. They are
designed to expose students and faculty to a whole range of
current issues and will enable them to examine critically
many of the problems that lie at the interphase between
science, medicine and society. Each speaker will be asked
to give a talk of approximately one hour, and this will be
followed by a discussion period. In principle, it is
hoped that we might record these talks with the possibility
of editing them into a book suitable for the general public,
and college audiences.

I cordially invite you to be our speaker for
our meeting scheduled on Monday, February 5th, 1979 at 5.30 p.m.
The title and topic of your lecture we will most willingly
leave to you. We only ask that it relates to the wider
dimensions of science and medicine, or to their humanistic
relations. This concept is, we think sufficiently broad to
allow our speakers almost infinite scope. I understand that
you have regularly given a course at Stanford University on
Health and I am certain that any topic developing out of this
would suit us admirably. We all remember your Paley lecture
as one of the high spots of 1972.

We would be able to offer you an honorarium fee of
$500. I do hope you will be able to accept.
