STANFORD UNIVERSITY STANFORD, CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES September 12, 1955 Dr. Charles Yanofsky Department of Microbiology Western Reserve University School of Medicine Cleveland, Ohio Dear Yanofsky: As you undoubtedly are aware, an International Symposium on Enzymes: Units of Biological Structure and Function, is to be held in Detroit, November 1 - 3, 1955, under the sponsorship of the Henry Ford Hospital, As chairman of the first afternoon session on Gene-Enzyme Relations I want to extend to you a cordial invitation to participate in this session. You will shortly receive from Dr. 0. H. Gaebler the formal invitation, further information, and the program of the entire Symposium. It is my understand- ing that you will be reimbursed for travel and other expenses if you can take part. The nature of the session on Genes and Enzymes is indicated by the enclosed copies of the suggested revised program, and of the letter being sent the other participants. It is felt that no presentation of gene-enzyme relations can be complete without consideration of the work on the td locus which you and your collaborators have so beautifully carried through. I therefore hope that you will be able and willing to discuss the results, implications and concepts of your work in this area in the Symposium, and to take part in the discussions following the papers. As you see from the schedule, relatively little time is allotted to free discussion and it is hoped that by appropriate organization and plan- ning, much of the last hour from 4:10 to adjournment will actually amount to discussion. Actually, the time allotted to you and to Lederberg is only ten- tative, and if you feel your formal presentation can be given in less than 20 minutes, correspondingly more time will be available for discussion, I hope you will feel free to organize your presentation and discussion as you think will fit best into the general framework of the session, and to suggest any improvements which occur to you. I am very anxious for your participation in this Session, and shall be anticipating a favorable answer to this invitation. With best regards, a CA E. L. Tatum ELT: ps Encl. 2
