THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE Madison 6 DEPARTMENT OF BACTERIOLOGY March 5, 1953 Dr. BE. L. Tatum Department of Biological Sciences Stanford University Stanford, California Dear Ed; I have only a few copies of the reprint on nitrogen fixation that appeared in ADVANCES IN ENZYMOLOGY since, as you know, they are quite restrictive in the number of separates they allow. Actually I got ten although some people tell me they have secured as many as twenty-five. At any rate I restrict them only for very special people and I believe I can count you among these. In return I wonder if you would mind sending a note to the Eli Lilly Award Committee supporting Josh Lederberg. I am afraid this is going to be an annual chore until Josh reaches 34. I just can't understand how they could have possibly turned him down last year. This year the prospects are not so bright since it usually goes to an immunologist’ Nevertheless I think we should continue to put him up since there may be a derth of brilliant young scholars one of these years and they will give it to him even though he is not bordering on the senile old age of 35. In my letter I merely pointed out that the high recommendations we submitted last year still hold and that,if anything his acconm- plishments during the past year reinforce these. I believe this is sent to Geoffrey Rake, Squibb Institute in New York. Looking forward to seeing you this summer. Sincerely, enNm~ P. W. Wilson Professor of Bacteriology pww /mje ® ou. alwuhe “c—
