Kennedy visited the clinic in conjunction © __with his health hearings in L.A. On hand ~~ to greet the Senator and to explain the ~ health problems of the urban Indian in L.A. ~ were Program Coordinator Rev. Emmett. . Sarracino, Bill Givens, Chairman of the Clinte Board and Dr. Ronald Hare, Chair- man of the Professional Advisory Commit- tee, (Dr. Hare, a general surgeon on the staff of the Hospital of the Good Samaritan, _ organized medical procedures for the Clin- ic, and has been most generous in volun- teering his professional services on clinic nights). . Staff Members Georgia Adson, RN (Clinic Manager) Mahonta Badhorse, (Medical Secretary), Mary Jane Buckley, LVN and Carl Freeman (Field Workers) as well as a large number of the Board Members and volunteers were present, many in native Indian costume. Mr. Kennedy toured the facility, chat- ted with the individuals stationed at their usual posts in the clinic, and said that he was impressed with what was being accom- plished..-He agreed that there was great _ need for this kind of assistance and ex- : pressed surprise when told that the Clin- ic had been established without any aid from the Bureau of Indian’ Affairs, who - provide no health programs for eg urban Indian, The Clinic, which offers medical, dental | and counselling services two nights a week, from 7 to 10, has been the recent subject of interviews by Newsweek and California ae _ Health Magazines, and 'theNew York’ Times; _and fs being featured ino. documentary film ‘on free Clintes.” : 2 tee LLU "aE . Ing for Area V, points out that the final ~~. class of the Coronary Care Training Pro- gram for Nurses in Area V will be cor ducted in June, 1971, and says;, OTH. 3~year grant will be completed i in July,. 197 and will not be renewed. .As you mayremember, this grant has enabled — _the Hospital of the Good Samaritan--in cooperation with St. Vincent's and St. “Joseph Hospitals--to provide monthly ' 4-week training courses for nurses em- ployed in’ Coronary Care Units through- out L.A. Though efforts are currently under way to continue the training pro- gram on a self-supporting basis, it is likely that many nurses will no. longer be able to receive the needed training. Some alternatives suggested by the Area V Nursing Advisory Committee include the integration of more CCU content into the basic nursing curricu~ lum, periodic local CCU training courses under the auspices of Nursing Departments of community colleges and periodic cooperative training courses x two or more local hospitals. With tt in mind, Area V is co-sponsoring the two acute cardiac nursing courses de- _ scribed in the enclosed brochure." Hospitals are urged to send a member of the staff to both of these unique learning experiences so that each ‘facil- ity might be better able to lead the way in meeting this critical training need. Ten- tatively, the task force; which would be composed of experts. in some 18 skills and ~ fields, would have 18-25 members, with a staff made up of representatives from the RMP and COMP organizations.
