Nursing educators from 18 states met in Denver on June 23 for a four-day ‘study of -the unique
continuing education program of the University of Colorado Scheol ‘of Nursing.’ The CU: pro-.

gram of year-round, intensive short courses for nurses practicing in‘a wide’ variety of. pro-.'
fessional fields is one of the most stimulating continuing education programs in’the nation.

The program 1e headed by Mra. Elda S.: Popiel, Assistant Dean, Continuing “Education. “The 1°
department is currently developing core programs inthe area of crisis nursing: (to meet”
the needs of the growing number and kinds of specialized intensive care facilities):.and ©.
rehabilitation and maintenance in chronic disease (to address the -issue of “Living after
survival.") Since all the continuing education efforts are coordinated through Colorado” ©
Nurses Association, the University,. and the basic schéols of nursing in Colorado, ‘guccessful
courses are quickly integrated into the formal basic ‘and. graduate nursing education cur- ‘

Overall guidance for program development and coordindtion is provided by an ‘advisory com- oS

mittee which brings together 36 representatives from Various nursing environments:and ° ee":
allied professions. In addition, each of the major program offerings ‘is:designed;: de-. ‘
veloped, and presented with the aid of a apecific advisory committee made up ‘o£ nursing:
and other health professionals, who have an acknowledged’ commitment and/or expertise ‘in

The Colorado program is "participant" centered as opposed to curriculum centered.” It'draws: |
together resource faculty from throughout the state to' present workshops, insticutes, cone °""™
ferences, and short-term intensive courses in response to requeste’ from the state's pro~. 9
fessional groups and health care institutions. It provides on-the-job consultation ‘as a...
part of the structure of a number ‘of ‘the courses, thereby maximizing the ‘opportunity’ for =.
influencing the practice of top quality'nursing care in Colorado. (There ‘are approximately |
10,000 RN's practicing in Colorado with’ 50% in Denver, making the city one of ‘the ‘few’ res

It is the policy of the University of ‘Colorado that all adult and continuing education offer~
ings be non-credit, Because.of this, no set curriculum needs to be followed:nor a time for,

final exams scheduled. - This enables the Continuation Education ‘Services. to‘create, the kinds

of learning experiences which will meet’ the needs of the nurse-participants in''the program. we

The conferees. from California included the Inservice Coordinator from Kaiser Foundation.
Hospital, Bellflower, the: Director of Inservice Training from Kaiser Foundation’ Hospital"
in Los Angeles and the Director of Education and Training. at. Kaiser Medical Care Entities ae
Fontana. The five of us were greatly impressed with the gourse content and plan to explore |
the possibilities of getting a similar program going in Southern California, We'll be. | |
