Dear Maxine:
Phase I of Project 2061 turned out to be more difficult than many of us imagined, but we can now all take satisfaction in what has been accomplished. The reports have been well received and Phase II is on its way.
This could not have happened had not the National Council on Science and Technology set high standards for the project, monitored its work carefully, contributed creative ideas when they were most needed, and persevered even when the project seemed to be in trouble of one kind or another. The unwavering commitment of the Council to the goals of Project 2061 and to our approach has resulted in what I believe will become recognized as a landmark education report and a turning point in the history of science education in America.
I want especially to thank you for your contribution to Phase I. Your critical insights, strong sense of purpose, and willingness to respond thoughtfully whenever called upon were of enormous help to my colleagues and me. We were sustained by the confidence you had in us and buoyed by your optimism and vision. In every respect, professional and personal, it was a privilege to have worked with you. The enclosed boxed set of Phase I reports is presented to you as a token of our appreciation and as a reminder of what you helped the AAAS accomplish.
I trust that your interest in Project 2061 will continue, and I will make every effort to keep you informed on our progress. As a first installment, I have enclosed a short report to bring you up to date on our activities. It will not surprise you to learn that Phase II is turning out to be at least as challenging as Phase I and far more complex in the bargain -- so be forewarned that I will be calling on you for help from time to time.
Thank you for all you have done to make this a successful undertaking. My personal best wishes to you for a rewarding summer.
