Dear Erv:
I have just returned from a trip to New York, where I talked with representatives of some of the big foundations about the joint program of research in chemistry and biology that is being carried out at the California Institute of Technology, and our plans for the future.
Professor Beadle was with me, and both feel that there is little doubt that continued support for our joint program can be obtained. We are, however, very worried that the lack of space will interfere seriously with the development of the program, and we hope that it will be possible to obtain funds to build the projected laboratory.
There is one change that should, we think, be made. We found that in general there was some misunderstanding about our use of the expression medical chemistry, Apparently this term has been used in the past in a special way, and some of the people that we met misunderstood our program because of the use of the term. We are planning to drop this term, and in the future to refer simply to our joint program in chemistry and biology.
We are now working on the revised description of the program, and I shall send a copy of it to you in a  few days.
