STANFORD UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER STANFORD, CALIFORNIA 94805 DEPARTMENT OF BIOCHEMISTRY Area Code 415 STANFORD UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE 497-6161 December 20, 1974 Dr. Daniel Nathans Department of Microbiology Johns Hopkins University Medical School Baltimore, Maryland. Dear Dan, Iam presently writing up my work on the physical structure of the genomes of the defectives that we cloned at Stanford. I would like to site your work on this subject, but I have not yet seen any papers relating to it. Would you therefore please send me a copy of the Brockman, Lee and Nathans Cold Spring Harbor Symposium paper and any other preprints you may have relating to this topic. Also, I am writing my thesis and would greatly appreciate receiving any preprints you could send me concerned with SV40 mutants, complementation groups and their map locations, etc. and a copy of your review article on restriction enzymes if it has already been written. Thanks for sending me the BSC-40 cells. I still haven't straightened out the difference we see in complementation between the B and C group mutants. The one experiment I have tried so far with your cells failed because I obtained too few plaques to get meaningful results - i.e., your cells give much lower titers than my CVI1-P cells do. Sincerely yours, f Mgt? oO a é Janet Mertz
