In Monday's (February 27) Globe George Will reports approvingly that
President Reagan repeated enthusiastigally the following quotation
from Whittaker Chambers’ book The Witness, to the effect that the
delicate convolutions of a loved child's ear "is not the result of a
chance aggregation of atoms, It requires design, and that means God."

The choice of example ig biologically remarkable. The human outer

ear is an almost rudimentary organ, whose convolution has diminished

to practically nothing from those of early mammals, much more dependent
on hearing than we are or our fellow apes. To the evolutionary
biologist, this singhhar creation of the Lord is nothing but a remasat
of a much superior piece of equipment.

Perhaps the President should on matters of science, take his cues

from professional scientists rather than from profesational ex-
communists.
