It's a lovely story; thank you so much. And I do think it can be called "a scientific example of serendipity."
We've added the enclosed insert to our manuscript. We weren't absolutely sure that you had given us permission to use the information you sent, so we are sending a carbon. Changes can be made on the galleys.
You can see from the language that we really are aiming at the layman with virtually no knowledge of science.
