November 23, 1966 Dear Francis: I am troubled very much by your hostile reactions to "Honest Jim." The thought of our long, most productive, and thoroughly enjoyable friendship coming to an unnecessary end thoroughly depresses me. But you offer no possibility for compromise and tell me that the book is not only a stab-in-the-back invasion of your privacy but in bad taste and poorly written. But, as I think it is a good book and in no way harms you or your reputation, I can not bring myself to accept your request. I say this with much regret for on most occasions I have found yours judgments sensible and to the point. But at this moment I regretfully cannot follow your counsel. Yours sincerely, J. D. Watson
