November 14, 1973 Dear Francis, Your last letter was much appreciated. Having said my piece, I'd prefer to let the matter drop and get back to where we were before all that happened. Arthur has tried to keep me informed about your progress but I have the feeling some of it is being lost in the transmission. I'm not quite certain I have all the facts, interpretations or notions but he did say that Rog was in the process of preparing the most recent findings and interpretations for publication so I'd appreciate getting a preprint when its available. As for our own efforts, they are becalmed. There's no one in the lab now working on the, "SV40 Chromatin" and probably very little more will be done until Jack returns in January. The major obstacle to publishing what we have now is my insistence on making sure that the isolation procedure for the SV40 chromatin structures we developed is entirely reliable and reproducable. Moreover, we need to get a good number for the protein-DNA ratio and for Jack to make good measurements on the dimensional parameters. Marianne Dieckmann will, in the next month or so, try to confirm the isolation procedure and quantitate the yields. Jack will make the measurements when he returns. All the rest is written up and ready to go. With best regards, Sincerely,
