Enclosed are two things I had promised to send you:
1) Some data obtained in the lab regarding the efficiency of disinfection of SV40 virus and its DNA by chlorox and autoclaving. Both are the usual procedures for disinfecting glassware and other items used in SV40-animal cell work in ours and other labs. Bacteria and [lambda] bacteriophage have been disinfected this way for years with complete confidence of its effectiveness.  I send this to you to counter the comment made by Sedat at your DAC meeting as to the ineffectiveness in inactivating supercoiled DNAs by these procedures.
2) At your suggestion and with your assurance that it need not be a very polished document, you will find a brief statement put together by Dave Hogness and me about three ways in which recombinant DNA research has and will continue to have major impact in basic biologic research. It was difficult to restrict the writing to three but these I believe are particularly illustrative of what people are eager to do now.
