GEORGE the Second, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, France and Ireland 
King, defender of the faith, &c. To all whom these presents shall come, Greeting. 
Whereas, our Trusty and well beloved Dr. John Hooper, Man-midwife, late of Reading 
in the County of Berks, now living in Queen street, Cheapside, London, has repre- 
sented unto Us, that at a considerable expence, and much Study, for many years, be 
has at last found out and invented a Medicine, and we being willing to give encour- 
agement to all Arts and Inventions which may be for the public good, know ye there- 
fore that We, of our special grace, certain knowledge and mere Motion have given 
and granted, and by these presents, for Us, our heirs and successors, do give and 
grant unto the said John Hooper, his assigns, &c. and such person only as they shall 
agree with, our special licence, full power, sole privilege, and authority to vend ssme. 
And to the end that the said John Hooper, and his assigns, may-have and enjoy the 
full benefit, sole use and exercise of the said invention, We do by these presents, for 
Us, our heirs and successors, require and strictly command all and every person and 
persons, body politic and corporate, and all other subjects whatsoever, of what state 
quality, degree, name, or condition soever they be, that neither they, nor any of them, 
either directly or indirectly, do make use, or put in practice, the said invention, or 
any part of the same, nor make or cause to be made any addition thereunto, or sub- 
traction from the same, whereby to pretend himself or themselves, the inventor or 
inventors, devisor or devisors thereof, as they will answer their contempt of this our 
royal command, and further to be answerable to the said John Hooper, or his assigns, 
according to law, for his or their damages thereby occasioned. 
In witness whereof, We have caused these our Letters to be made patent 
Witness JOHN Archbishop of Canterbury Each box contains about 40 pills; which is 10 doses, and are 
sealed up in their directions, with a seal having these words, JN. 
HOOPER’S PILLS; and around it by THE ROYAL BRAND, the 
same as in the margin. The price is 25 CENTS a box retail, and no 
more to be taken by anyone who sells them. The Gold Seals are 
$l,OO per box. 
DIRECTIONS for their use. 
Take two or three pills every night going to bed, from seven years old to fifteen, 
and those above that age to seventy, are to take three or four after the same manner. 
They purge very little, and may be taken without any confinement or danger of tak- 
ing cold; and there is no occasion to drink any other liquor with them than a little 
liquid to wash them down. And as some persons have an aversion to taking of Pills, 
those may take them cut in small pieces, mixed in the pulp of an Apple, or dissolved 
in a little liquid. . 
Special Notice of the Star Brand Gold Seal Hooper’s Rifts 
This original manner, form and style of putting"up each individual box or package 
of Hooper’s Gold Seal Pills, together with the title, has been protected by registra- 
tion at the Patent Office, in Washington, D. C. These pills were never made in Eng- 
land, but were originated by H. B. Taylor, Druggist, Philadelphia, Pa., U. S. A. Beware 
of Counterfeits. 
There has been such a great demand for Better Pills, that we have been manu- 
facturing for a long time Extra Quality Gold Seal Pills, which give more satisfaction 
than all other makes, and if they are required, see that you get the extra quality. 
Star Brand Gold Seal Pills—Take no other. They contain nothing injurious. 
They are more frequently t v ployed by the faculty than any other make of pills, 
on account of their safety and superior virtues and salutary effects. They are con- 
sidered better than all the high-priced pills now advertised throughout this country 
by incompetent persons and vendors. The demand for this brand of pill has been so 
great in the United States that it has been difficult for chemists to get the genuine 
article, and it has now become necessary on account of the many counterfeits to 
change the seal for the better make. Hereafter you will see that the gold seal is on 
the lid and outside of each box, with the words “Gold Seal” in green on the bottom 
of the box. The pills are black, of medium size, and are better than the Red or Black 
Seal. The counterfeits are of various sizes, and some very small. While the regular 
pills are effective, the stronger pills are used when the others do not have the desired 
effect
