ft Hill's Rheumatic Specific. ♦NEURALGIA. NEURALGIA and some forms of Rheumatism, are so closely allied to each other, in ' their symptoms, that it is often difficult to make any definite distinction between them, and it is fortunate that the treatment that is applicable in the one, is also indicated in the other. It may be safely stated however, that when an affection assumes a form of irritation only, without any signs of inflammation except the pain, and is directed especially to the nervous system, it may with propriety be termed Neuralgia, or Neuralgic Rheumatism. Indeed the most prevalent forms of Neuralgia, are nothing more nor less than Rheumatism confined to the nerves, or their investing membranes, and to the parts in which the affected nerves are distributed. Neuralgia proper is never attended with heat, redness, swelling, or fever, but is invaribly attended with pain, more or less severe, and other disorders of sensation, which are sources of great suffering and discomfort to the patient. Any person may be subject to Neuralgia, but it predominates in persons of a nervous temperament, and is most common in females, students, professional men, and persons of sedentary habits. , Neuralgia may attack the nerves of almost any part, or organ of the body, such as those of the stomach, the bowels, the heart, the bladder, and the kidneys; but the nerves most frequently affected, are the Tri-facial, and their branches. Why Neuralgia or Rheumatism either, should seize upon some special nerve, or part, and exempt the balance of the body, is one of those unexplainabie phenomena, that some- times present themselves to the student of pathology, and cannot be accounted for, upon any rational hypothesis. It may be, that at the time of the invasion, the parts attacked are from some cause more susceptible than other parts of the body, and are less liable to resist disease, and hence become a prey to the malady. When Neuralgia is confined to the tri-facial nerve, of either side, or its branches, it is very properly denominated FACIAL NEURALGIA. THE tri-facial, is the 5th pair of cranial nerves, and consequently have close communica- tion with the brain. In the temple a ganglion, or nerv® centre is developed, from which is given off, three large branches, which , are distributed over the entire face. Any or all the branches of the tri-facial nerve may be affected, but the one most commonly involved is the Supra-Orbital branch, which passes over the eye brows, and is distributed to the forehead and the surrounding parts. Facial Neuralgia is characterized by excrutiating pain, in the temple and above the eye brows, often radiating over the entire side of the face, not unfrequently involving even the teeth, and is one of the most distressing, and annoying troubles that afflict mankind. But the affection is so common, and the symptoms are so pronounced, that a further description of its symptoms is unnecessary. CAUSES OF NEURALGIA. IT is impossible to name in detail, all of the causes which operate in the production of Neuralgia in each individual case. Many of the causes are the same, or similar to those producing ordinary Rheumatism, and hence the affection is very properly some- times denominated Neuralgic Rheumatism. Habitual constipation, over-work of the brain, sedentary habits, exposure, excessive grief, mental anxiety, or whatever depresses the vital forces, and renders the patient susceptible, may be considered as predisposing causes. Among the most common exciting causes may be mentioned the accumulation of certain morbid and unhealthy products, which in circulating through the blood come in contact with the nerves, and their centres, cause irritation, which is manifested by pain, and other disordered sensations, which is known by the common name of Neuralgia. TREATMENT. AR-THRO-PHON-I-A, (Hill's Rheumatic Specific) is a never failing remedy for Neuralgia. It never disap- points those who try it. It acts as an alterative, and corrects the Rheumatic diathesis or habit. It acts upon the Kidneys, increases the flow of urine and relieves the congestion. It acts upon the skin, opens its pores, and renders it soft and pliable. It acts upon the stomach and improves digestion and assimilation. It neutralizes the various acids in the system and renders them inert. It acts as a tonic and tones the entire system up to a healthy standard. Price $1 per bottle. ? (OVER) Form 31. SPECIAL DIRECTIONS. FOR AR=THRO=PHON=I=A. To give rules for taking a medicine is one thing, to have them followed is another. If you wish the Ar-thro-phon-i-a to do what we claim for it, you must follow directions faithfully and persistently. The size of the dose and the manner of taking should be governed by the intensity of the attack. ACUTE OR INFLAMMATORY RHEUMATISM. I f the pain is severe take one tablespoonful every two hours. When the paroxysms subside increase the intervals to three hours. After the symtoms have disappeared continue the use of Ar-thro-phon-i-a from three to four weeks, taking one tablespoonful four times a day, before each meal and at night. In aggravated cases of the acute form, let the sufferer's diet consist entirely oi milk, oatmeal gruel, plain toast, boiled rice or farinacious food, for at least a week after the temperature has become normal. On the Other hand if the patient is allowed to indulge in meats and soups, you may look forward with certainty to a relapse. DIET. CHRONIC RHEUMATISM. The food should be simple and restricted in quantity, avoid all seasoning of a stimulating and aromatic character, also acid beverages. When the pain is severe take the same as in Acute or Inflammatory for twenty-four hours. Then take it regularly four times a day, before each meal and at night, until the pain and stiffness have all disappeared. NEURALGIA. Follow the directions given for Acute Rheumatism as to diet and taking the Ar-thro-pho-ni-a. Ar-thro-phon-i-a has a better effect if taken before meals, but can be taken after or during the meal. Be sure and take it as near regular hours four times a day as you can. Remember Rheumatism is caused by an acid condition of the blood, which'must be removed before a cure can be affected. To do this youmusi follow directions carefully and persistently. AVOID CONSTIPATION. While the Ar-thro-phon-i-a has a laxative tendency, if not sufficiently so, take one teaspoonful of Hill's Celery Tea (as per directions) before retiring each night until your bowels move regularly twice a day. As it is important that the bowels should be kept open, we would advise you to attend to nature at a certain hour each morning whether you have any desire or not. N. B. The valves, and investing membrane of the Heart may become diseased, and subject the patient to the possibility of a sudden and unexpected death, or from long and continued congestion, the Kidneys may degenerate into incurable Bright's Disease, which carries off its thousands annually. Even such a possibility should be a sufficient warning. THE common form of Neuralgia, is nothing more nor less, than Rheumatism confined more particularly to the nervous trunks or large branches, and usually depends upon similar causes to those producing Rheumatism, and might with propriety be called Nervous Rheumatism. It is non-inflammatory, but very painful, and is as intractable and hard to cure as ordinary Rheumatism. Like conditions require like remedies, and our experience has taught us that what cures Rheumatism, also cures Neuralgia.
