THE NEW SUPERFATTED MEDICI NHL SOHPS, As prepared according to the directions and under permanent control of P. J. EICHHOFF, M. D., Superintending Physician to the Departments of Skin Diseases and Syphilis of the City Hospitals at Elberfeld, (Germany). In the articles on Medicinal Soaps (“ Dermatologuche Studien,” II Reihe, I Heft, 1889, and in the u Volkmann18ohen Sammlung Klinischer Yortrdye, Neue Folge,” 5 Ileft, 3 890), Dr. Eichhoff inaugurates a reform in the treatment of most Skin Diseases by giving precedence to the so-called Soap Method over the Salve Method, by proving that the Soap treatment has the following viz • 1. It is more effective. 2. It is hess troublesome. 3. It is less disagreeable, and cleaner. 4. It is absolutely harmless. 3. It is less expensive. All these advantages are of the greatest weight in the practical use of Medicinal Soaps, and necessarily have made them more and more popular with the Medical Profession. Medicinal Soaps in regard to their chemical properties may be divided as follows into : Alkaline Soaps (with a plus of free alkali). Neutral Soaps (in which all free alkali is bound b}r oleic acid). So-called Acid Soaps (which are made either by an addition of free acid or by superfattening, and which may eventually show an acid reaction). The latter (superfatted) soaps are in general the most adapted to the treatment of various Skin Diseases, and for massage in certain cases. The four different methods of application of the soaps are as follows, beginning with the mildest form : 1. Simple washing with the soap. 2. Rubbing dry the applied foam with woolen cloths. 3. Allowing the rubbed in foam to dry. 4. Retaining the applied foam by means of water-tight dressings. A flirt her indication for the use of medicinal soaps is found, which does not solely occur in derma- totherapy, but is also met with in surgery and internal medicine, namely, its use in massage. In all the above-mentioned ways of application, the medicament incorporated in the soap must naturally l>e of a much more intensive action than if used in the form of salve, paste or ointment, for the reason that soap has a greater chemical affinity to the human skin and its organs. The method of superfattening has been changed considerably in these soaps. Where they were formerly superfatted with 4 per cent. Olive Oil, they are now superfatted with a mixture of 2 per cent. Lanolin and 3 per cent. Olive Oil. Lanolin being an animal fat of great softness, and which does not turn rancid, is especially adapted for this purpose. It is very readily absorbed by the skin, and easily mixes with water, a very important point in the act of washing, as through it the co-efficiency of absorption of the soap and the medicament is considerably increased. If Lanolin (5 per cent.) alone was taken for superfattening, the foaming of the soap would be impaired. A mixture of Lanolin and Olive Oil was therefore taken in the proportions before mentioned; thus were combined the agreeable plant oil with the useful animal fat. The basis of the soap used for all these medicinal preparations consists of 3 parts pure tallow and 1 part pure Olive Oil. The following is a list of the different soaps with the addition of percentages of component parts, and the special diseases for which they have been indicated by Dr. Eichhoff. The wrapper on each cake contains the formula of its composition, also the signature of Dr. Eichhoff, without which none is genuine. RESORCIN-SALICYLIC SOAP—(containing 3g Resorcin, 3g Salicylic Acid). Parasitical eczema, seborrhcea of the head. RESORCIN-SALICYLIC-SULPHUR SOAP—(containing 3g Resorcin, 3g Salicylic Acid, log Sulphur). Parasitical eczema, acne vulgaris, acne rosacea. EESORCIN-SALICYLIC-SULPHUR-TAR SOAP—(containing 3g Resorcin, 3$ Salicylic Acid, log Sulphur, 5g Tar). Psoriasis vulgaris. 0,1;) NINE SOAP—(containing 3g Quinine). ms of mykoses, pityriasis versicolor. HYDROXYLAJVlIN SOAP—(containing 3g Hydroxyl amin). CREOLIN SOAP—(containing 5g Creolin). Scabies, Impetigo contagiosa, intertrigo, viz.: chafing. ERGOTIN SOAP—(containing 5g Ergotin). Posacea, angiectasies, small varices, for massage of migraine. IODINE SOAP—(containing 3g Iodine, 1-Jg Iodide of Potassium). Small tumors, luetic ulcers, lupus, eczema parasitarium, sykosis, mykoses. SALICYLIC-CREOSOTE SOAP—(containing 5g Salicylic Acid, 2g Creosote). Lupus. MENTHOL SOAP—(containing 5g Menthol). Pruritus universalis et looalis (genitalis, analis) SALOL SOAP—(containing 5g Salol). Parasitical eczema, psoriasis, eczema marginatum, mykoses. ARISTOL SOAP—(containing 2# Aristol). Psoriasis, ulcus cruris, gummous syphilis, ulcerated lupus, dermatomyhoses. SULPHUR-CAMPHOR-PERUB ALSA M SOAP—(containing 5# Sulphur, 5# Camphor, 3# Perubalsam). Acne vulgaris, sehorrhoea faciei et corporis. SALICYLIC-ICHTHYOL SOAP —(containing 2# Salicylic Acid, 6# Ichthyol). Acne vulgaris, acne rosacea, eczema, and for massage of rheumatic affections of the joints and muscles.
