POSTSCRIPT.—We have just received from the Moral Reform Union, Leinster Place, Cleveland Gardens, W., London, a choice collection of pamphlets bearing on the failure of the Contagious Diseases Acts in Great Britain ; also, through the same source, a valuable set of the testimony before the parliamentary commission on that subject, thoroughly in- dexed. The latter cost us 14s. 6d., including postage. We have purchased from a friend in London a valuable set of the Pall Mall Gazette during the Stead exposures, together with some unique documents and autographs embracing the whole exciting episode. These cannot be duplicated. The “testimony” is to be had in a limited way, and will be increasingly valuable. 5 PAMPHLETS BOUND TOGETHER. Vol. I.—MORDAUNT, Harry, Col. Modest Defense of Public Stews. Note.—Librariau* who wish to add to their stock a few works on this long ne- glected, but important branchof sociology, are recommended to examine the following: 1. Historical.—The monumental work of Pareut-Duchatelet is beyond doubt the fairest and most comprehensive. It is not dear, but is only published in French. Sanger’s work, published by Harper Brothers, is out of print. Both these authors favor liceuse. 8 2. Statistical and Argumentative.—The address of Dr. Gross, Phiia., 1874, is a strong presentation of the claims of state inspection from the standpoint of the physician. A. M. Powell, of New York, has well answered this in his “8tate Regulation of Vice,” to be had for 75c. This work is designed for adults of both sexes. The conflict on this subject has raged on the continent of Europe, where numbers of books and pamphlets have rapidly followed each other, pro and contra. Most of these are printed in French, some in other continental languages. Among French authors, Corlieu, Despres, Jeannel, Lecour, Meugy, Mireur, Reuss, and Richard, favor license, while Guyot and Fiaux, as well as various writers in “La Revue Morale,” as strougly op- pose it. The latest work by Fiaux, “Les Maisous de Tolerance, leur Ferma- ture,” is very strong against the continental system, which seems to be de- cidedly on the defensive, if not “on the run.” The following English works are recommended, and will be added to our list as soon as possible : “Laws for the Regulation of Vice,” by Prof. Sheldon Amos. M.A., 542 pages, London, 1877, Stevens & Sons, 119 Chancery Lane; and “A State Iniquity, by Benjamin Scott, F.R.A.S., 401 pages, London, 1890, Kegan, Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co. Many thoughtless and some thoughtful, but ill-informed, persons in America ad- vocate this system, the cast-off plan of ancient monarchies, which is apparently better adapted to an autocratic country than to a democracy. The signs of the times indicate that the American People are beginning to awake to the necessity for some general plan in dealing with this monstrous evil. In order to avoid mistakes, which a knowledge of this subject, both broad and historical, would prevent, the writer suggests the importance of each state and muni- cipal library being in possession of a well chos en collection of works on this subject. To this end, I would be pleased to correspond with you further, if you wish. I am not in the book business, and whatever purchases you may conclude to make should be through the regular trade channels. Yours respectfully, J. W. WALTON, 161 River Street, Cleveland, Ohio.
