THE VIBURNUM COMPOUND. THE FORMULA OF W. R. Hayden, M. D. Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1881, By W. R. Hayden, in the office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington. VIBURNUM OPULUS. (HIGH CRANBERRY.) The Viburnum Compound. The Formula of W. E. Hayden, M. D. Note to the Third Edition. Gentlemen : We have the pleasure to present you with a copy of the Third Edition of our little Hand-Book on the Viburnum Compound, the remedyexcellence in uterine troubles, and the only successful prescription for DYSMENORRHtEA AND MENORRHAGIA. The success of the Viburnum Compound of Dr. Hayden is without a parallel in medicine, and no ordinary use of language will overstate the merits of this prescription. From every part of the Union we have received letters from physicians, commending it in the most eulogistic terms, which would seem to be extravagant and exagger- ated to those who have not witnessed the remarkable effects of the Viburnum Compound. Suffice it to say, that no physician who has employed this remedy in his practice, will on any consideration be without it in his pocket-case for emergencies.-The relief which it affords in Dysmenorrhoea, Threatened Miscarriage, Spasms, Colic, Cramp, Cholera Infantum, Cholera Morbus, Diarrhoea, and all Internal Pains of the Stomach and Bowels, makes it a great desideratum in the hands of all medical men, without regard to their particular pathy. AS A UTERINE TONIC, its action is most satisfactory. We desire to state for the information and the protection of the profession, that the Viburnum Compound of Dr. W. R. Hayden is an original prescription, and is not prepared by any other parties than the undersigned, and that all imitations or so-called "ELIXIRS OF HAYDEN'S VIBURNUM COMPOUND," are simply frauds intended to deceive and mislead. There are unfortunately in every community, unscrupulous persons who thrive on the brains of more honest men, and who would not hesitate to sacrifice the health and even the lives of the sick and dying to increase their gains, and we regret to say, that the drug trade is not entirely free from these ghouls. It is the intention of this Company to prose- cute and expose all persons who may offer for sale any pre- paration purporting to be "HAYDEN'S VIBURNUM COMPOUND" which is not genuine and made by us. Physicians will serve their own interests and confer a favor on the Company by furnishing us with any information that will aid us in the matter. Please write only for "Hayden's Viburnum Compound." PREPARED EXCLUSIVELY BY The New York Pharmaceutical Company, . Expressly for Physicians' Prescriptions, REDFORD 3IIX££AL SPRINGS, MASS. From the original formulaeof W. R. Hayden, M. D- NOTE TO TENTH EDITION. A National and Standard Remedy for Gynecologists and Physicians. THE VIBURNUM COMPOUND From the original formula of Dr. Hayden, also author of the formulae of the Simple and Compound Phosphorus Pills, which have been so extensively and successfully employed in all parts of the world for the past fifteen years. As an Anti-spasmodic, Nervine, and Tonic The Viburnum Compound of Dr. Hayden is a safe and reliable preparation which has been largely tested by thousands of physicians for the past twenty years with more satisfaction to them and their patients than any one or all other remedies in the Materia Medica (we make no exceptions) for Dysmenorrikea, Menorrhagia, Convulsions, Rigors, Threatened Abortion, After Pains, Insomnia, Overites, Nervous Excitability and Irritability, Mental Depression, Uterine Debility, and all Internal Pain of the Stomach and Bowels. IT RELIEVES, IT C.1I.MS, IT SOOTHES, without narcotizing, or stupifying the patient or leaving any unpleasant Sequoia?, a desideratum seldom attained in the adminstration of potent drugs. It is an admirable UTERINE TONIC, valuable in Sterility, and lack of physical tone. No special caution required in its administration, and an over-dose will not poison or endanger the life of the patient. The more you employ the Viburnum Compound in your practice the more you will appreciate its great value as a Special Remedy. Your servants, NEW YORK PHARMACEUTICAL CO. TO THE MEDICAL PROFESSION. Gentlemen, - We most respectfully ask your attention to some of the evidences in favor of a remedy of more than ordinary efficacy, and one which has met with more general approval than any other in the hands of the Profession - The Viburnum Compound - the formula of Dr. Hayden, which is prepared expressly for Phy- sicians' prescriptions. The testimonials and evidences of its merits which we give in this circular from well-known practitioners are as strong as human testimony can make them. Truly Yours, The New York Pharmaceutical Co. Viburnum Opulus, (The Hasis of the Viburnum Compound,) more commonly known as the High Cranberry, is not a new remedy, but an old and tried one, possessing far greater merit as a medicine than any of the boasted "New Remedies" of which we read so much. For many years a few practitioners have been familiar with the more than ordinary virtues of the bark of the Viburnum Opulus, or High Cranberry, a beautiful shrub or tree, growing from seven to twelve feet high, on the hill-sides in the more northerly parts of New England, and also in Canada, attracting attention in June by its handsome, showy flowers, of a reddish-white, and later in the season by its clusters of bright red berries, which, though much smaller than the ordinary meadow cranberry, resembles it both in color and taste. The properties of the bark of the Viburnum Opulus are anti- spasmodic and nervine, and while exerting great power in relaxing muscular rigidity and contraction, it yet exerts a still greater influ- ence as a uterine tonic, imparting tone and strength to the female organs of generation. The Viburnum Opulus is the basis of the Viburnum Compound, which as a remedy for DYSMENORRHCEA approaches as near a specific as any thing in medicine, rarely fail- ing to afford relief in the worst cases in a few minutes, excelling all other known remedies, exciting the deepest gratitude on the part of the suffering patient, and the highest admiration of the physician who may have tried all other means in vain. One of the remarkable peculiarities of the Viburnum Compound is its beneficial effects in cases apparently opposite, and seeming to call for different remedies. Thus in amenorrhoea, by its tonic influence, it excites the normal flow and period while in MENORRHAGIA, and flooding from any cause, it checks it by equalizing the circula- tion of the blood and causing a natural action of the functions. In 6 prolapsus uteri and debility of that organ and its muscles, it excites its most beneficial influence by stimulating a natural flow of the pent up fluids in the engorged tissues, relieving the uterus and its appendages of their stagnant currents of morbid blood, loaded with the humors of the body, which, when concentrated and retained an undue length of time, induce LEUCORRHCEA and a long train of evils. It is the engorgement of the womb, the ovaries and fallopian tubes that often cause ovarian diseases, polypus, hypertrophy, cauliflower, excresence, congestion, and that most dreaded of all diseases, cancer. One of the first manifestations of disease in the uterus is generally ulceration of the cervix, which shows an acrid condition of the fluids. The diseases enumerated in their turn by a reflex action upon the nervous system cause HYSTERIA, nervous prostration, insomnia, and a thousand and one distressing symptoms which we have no time or space to enumerate here, our province not being to write a treatise on morbid conditions of the system, but rather to call attention to the great merits of a remedy, which certainly exerts a most healthful influence over an organ which is very susceptible to dangerous and fatal diseases, and which also taxes the highest skill of the medical man to successfully combat. We copy from the "American Dispensary" the following in re- gard to the properties and uses of the Viburnum Opulus : "High Cranberry is a very powerful anti-spasmodic, and in consequence of this property, is more generally known by the name of Cramp Bark. It is more effective in relaxing cramps and spasms of all kinds, a* Asthma, Hysteria, Cramps of the Limbs and other parts, in females, especially during pregnancy, and it is said to be highly beneficial to those who are subject to convulsions during pregnancy, or at parturi- tion, preventing the attacks entirely, if used daily for the last two or three months of gestation." The preparation which has given such a prominence to the Vibur- num Opulus, and has excited so much inquiry among physicians, and brought it into special and deserved favor, is the VIBURNUM COMPOUND, from the formulae of Dr. Hayden, which was first presented to the notice of the profession, twenty years ago, and which has been and still is prepared exclusively by The New York Pharmaceutical Coin- 7 pany for physicians' prescriptions, and is dispensed by all reliable apothecaries. We think we are justified in asserting that no one medicinal preparation has met with more decided and universal favor from medical men, than the Viburnum Compound, not excepting the Compound Phosphorus Pills, which were also originated by Dr. Hayden, and which have attained a world-wide reputation in the treatment of nervous disorders among all classes of physicians. PROLAPSUS UTERI. This almost universal derangement is the standing reproach of the Gynecologist, more thought, study, and experiment having been devoted to misplacements of the uterus, and their unfortunate results than to any one, or all other ills that the female is heir to; all mechanical appliances and contrivances beyond their mere temporary employment proving more depressing than restorative, by throwing the uterine muscles and their fibre into disuse, and consequently increased relaxation and debility. The indication desired to be ful- filled is to tone up and contract the uterine fibre, and nothing but a remedy having this property, and a special affinity for the uterus will bring about this most happy result. The experience and testimony of more than two thousand physicians have been given in favor of the Viburnum Compound of Dr. Hayden as being decidedly the best of uterine tonics. DYSMENORRHCEA, Functional and mechanical. These two conditions often exist in consequence of a lack of physical development. The great majority of young women suffer more or less severely at the regular catamenia, the immediate cause of which is usually induced by a congested state of the ovaries, a contraction of the fallopian tubes, or a stricture of the cervix uteri and occlusion of the os-tincea. One or all of the above conditions may exist at one and the same time. Whatever will act directly upon these organs and relax them, will at once miti- gate the suffering and restore a normal action. Mechanical inter- ference will be sufficient in a few cases to afford relief, but is always objectionable to the patient and to be avoided by the physician when a more agreeable remedy will answer the purpose equally well. In no way can the practitioner win reputation and gratitude so quickly as by relieving his patient if she be agonized with pain from dysmen- orrhcea. The original prescription of the Viburnum Compound was written more than twenty years since, by W. R. Hayden, M.D., of New York City, and it has during that time proved more successful in the complaint under consideration than any other known remedy. For special directions, see page 26. 8 An eminent physician in New York of large experience, (whose name is at the service of any physician who may require itj, stated to the writer of these pages, a most remarkable experience which he had had in the employment of the Viburnum Compound, in cases oi menorrhagia, and in flooding from MISCARRIAGE, where it fulfilled the desired indications after all other means usually employed had failed. The Viburnum Compound does not depend upon the peculiar properties or action of any one plant, but by a happy and scientific combination of several, whose united influence produce the desired results. Some physicians profess to object to " compounds." Pray, will they tell us what vegetable is a simple or what remedy they employ that is not strictly a compound ? The following letter is from the pen of a man eminent in the medical profession both as teacher and practitioner, and •whose happy experience with the Viburnum Compound has been almost marvelous in the uses for which it is recommended. 19 East 32nd St., New York, March 22, 1880. W. R. Hayden, M. D. Dear Doctor.-The three pounds of Viburnum Compound which I obtained from you a few weeks since have been used with great suc- cess. If the gynecologists of the country were acquainted with the real merits of this preparation, hundreds of poor women who are now invalids could be restored without any difficulty. Yours respectfully, R. S. NEWTON, M. D. Lansdale, Penn., March 23, 1880. W. R. Hayden, M. D.,- Dear Doctor. - I have used all my Viburnum Compound, and have found it just what it is represented to be. It is certainly a desir- able addition to our valuable list of preparations, and so pleasant to take, I feel a great desire to recommend it to others as an important preparation. The Viburnum Compound has given me better satis- faction as an anti-spasmodic than any other of the same class ever before used. Your friend, respectfully, R. II. ANDREWS, M. D. Editor Medical Summary. 27 Adams St., Charlestown, Mass., March 23, 1S80. New York Pharmaceutical Company: Gentlemen: - I have had occasion (for the first time) to use the Viburnum Compound since I received yourcircular, and I am pleased to inform you with very satisfactory results. Respectfully, S. JACKSON, M. D. 18 New York City. To the New York Pharmaceutical Company. Gentlemen; - Permit me to offer my testimonial to the great merits of Dr. Hayden's Viburnum Compound. To have written the original prescription, the greatest name in the Profession might well be proud. I have had a large personal experience in the administration of the Viburnum Compound, and it has so uniformly fulfilled the desired indication, that I have come to rely upon it as an old and tried friend. It has given me more solid faith in the efficacy of medicine than anything else in my long practice. Truly yours, JOHN D. KELLY, M. D. Marshall, Clark Co., Illinois. W. R. Hayden, m. d.,-Dear Sir;-I have given your Viburnum a fair and extensive trial, with great satisfaction to myself and relief to my patients. I find in all cases of Dysmenorrhoea, where such is not dependent on mechanical obstruction, i. e. narrowing of canal, it is almost a specific, and even where mechanical obstruction exists, it affords great relief. I take more than ordinary interest in this matter as for ten years past I have had put up for my own use a preparation of sassafras, peppermint, golden seal, and ether, which I have used for the same purpose, but I am free to confess that your preparation is by far the most efficient. Yours truly, GEO. DIOG, M. d. Rutland, Vt. New York Pharmaceutical Company: Gents:-Some two or three months since one of your agents gave me a sample of Hayden's Viburnum Compound, which I gave to one of my patients with pleasing effects. I have tried to obtain more of it from some of our druggists but have failed to do so. Will you please send me a pound, C. O. D.; hoping to hear from you soon, 1 remain, Most respectfully, JOHN A. MEAD, M. d. Cincinnati, Ohio, Jan. 7, 1881. W. R. Hayden, m. d.,- Dear Doctor;-As useful medicines scientifically prepared and honorably introduced should have the encouragement of all who have used and found them invaluable to those suffering from specific trou- bles, I most cheerfully state, unsolicited, that I have for many years while engaged in a large practice in Cincinnati, O., used your Vibur- num Compound for the relief of those who were suffering from Dysmenorrhoea, and scarcely ever have I been disappointed when ex- pecting prompt ami satisfactory relief, provided themedicine was used according to directions. If more physicians used your Compound, in my opinion there would be less female suffering. Yours very respectfully, O. E. NEWTON, m. d. Professor Newton is extensively known in the West as a physician and surgeon of large experience, and also as a teacher and writer on medical subjects. 19 Newton Centre, Mass., May 4, 1880. SMITH, M.D., Auburn, N. Y., says: That "Hay- den's Viburnum Compound" is employed in Bennett Hospital, Chicago, Ill., with excellent results, and that he entertains a high opinion of its value. CHAS. L. GEORGE, M. D., Auburn, N. Y., says: I have used "Hayden's Viburnum Compound," and what I have used I liked. AMANDA SANFORD, M. D., AunuRN, N. Y., has used large quan- tities of "Hayden's Viburnum Compound," and has proved it to be a fine remedy. Drs. BAKER and BUTTERFIELD, Syracuse, N. Y., use "Hayden's Viburnum Compound" freely in Dysmenorrhoea, and also in other cases. We have received a larger number of testimonials to the efficacy of the Viburnum Compound from physicians than have ever been given for any other medicine in the United States, and we do not hesitate to say that it will give more decided satisfaction to both the practi- tioner and patient than any other remedy. Were it necessary we could extend the list with the names of well-known physicians in various parts of the country, who cordially endorse the superior merits of our Viburnum Compound. We are confident that physicians who once become familiar with the Vibur- num Compound of Dr. Hayden will in nowise be without it in the list of their most favorite remedies, as more satisfactory results can be obtained by its employment in the cases for which it is specially recommended than by any other medicinal preparation in this or any other country. In the city of Providence, K. I., nine out of every ten physicians prescribe Hayden's Viburnum Compound. It is also largely pre- scribed in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and in most of the States. 22 'The Viburnum Compound often induces Long and Quiet Sleep, from which the patient awakes refreshed, the head clear, and the ner- vous system invigorated by its tonic influence, which is never the case after taking narcotics. In all forms of internal pain in both sexes, tne most prompt re- lief is obtained in a few minutes. In Diarrhoea, Cholera Morbus, Cholera, Cramps, Spasms, Bilious Colic and nervous excitement, physicians will appreciate its happy effects upon their patients. The Viburnum Compound contains No Preparation of Opium, or other narcotic, and may be administered freely in doses of one to two tea-spoonfuls, and repeated every fifteen or twenty minutes, with- out any unpleasant after-effects, or causing any anxiety in the mind of the prescriber of having given an overdose. The Viburnum Com- pound is as essential in the physician's visiting case as MORPHIA or Quinia, and it will be so appreciated. It is not offensive to the taste or stomach, and is acceptable to children. General Directions. - Dose for adults, from one-half to two tea-spoonfuls in a table-spoonful of hot water or milk, and repeat every fifteen or twenty minutes in acute cases until relief is obtained. Special Directions For the administration of the Viburnum Compound in dysmenorrhoea. In cases where the patient suffers greatly at the monthly period, it is well to commence by giving her tea-spoonful doses of the Viburnum Compound every night for a week previous to the usual time. Immediately on the appearance of the catemenia, give her two-tea-spoonful doses of the Viburnum Compound every half-hour in a wine-glassful of hot water, sweetened, and continue to do so until relief is obtained, unless the stomach rejects it, in which case the dose should be reduced until it is tolerated. In very severe cases and spasms, hot applications to the loins and inferior extrem- ities are valuable aids as relaxants and keeping up a healthy circula- tion. Frequently after taking the Viburnum Compound, the patient will sleep soundly for several hours from the sudden cessation of pain, in such cases she should never be awakened through any fear of oversleeping, as the Viburnum Compound does not contain any narcotic whatever, nor does it leave any disagreeable after-effects and it may be given to a child, when necessary, without any special caution. 27 Thompson, Conn., January 17th, 1881. SUCCESSFUL TREATMEAT - OF - Nervous Prostration and all Nervous Derangements By Supplying the Constituents of Nerve Force to the Brain. The Simple and Compound Phosphorus Pills Have proved to be Valuable Remedies in the Treatment of all diseases of the BRAIN and NERVE CENTRES, particularly Lapse of Memory, Mental Derangement, Paraplegia, Hemiplegia, Nervous Headache, Locomotor Ataxia, Spermatorrhea, Paralysis, and Impotency, Especially in the three last, and where there is a loss of Vital or Nerve Force. The simple and compound Phosphorus Pills were first introduced to the Profession fifteen years since by the New York Pharmaceutical Company, they having procured the original formulas from the author, Dr. W. R. Hayden, of New York; they are prepared strictly accord- ing to his directions, and will be found reliable. The Phosphorus Pills are now prescribed in every city and town in the United States, also in most parts of Europe, and but few remedies have met with more decided approval. The following letters are specimens of many received, to which your attention is most respectfully solicited: - Schenectady, N. Y. W. R. Hayden, M. D.,- Dear Doctor: - Please send me 300 of your Compound Phosphorus Pills; I am highly pleased with them and too much praise cannot be given or said in their favor, provided they are used only in such cases in which they are applicable. They have never disappointed me, but given general satisfaction in every case in which I have employed them. I consider them anodyne, nervine, and stimulating food for the brain. I shall hardly know how to practice hereafter without them, as I know of no substitute to fulfil their indication. Yours truly, H. PEASE, M. D. 29 Equinunk, Wayne Co., Penn. W. R. Hayden, M. D. - Dear Doctor: - I have used your pills (compound mostly) for some time, in cases of nervous debility, lapse of memory and in one case of melancholy, with great benefit. I prescribe them in all cases where a prompt nervous tonic is required. Yours respectfully, WM. H. DeLONG, M. D. Fall River, Mass. W. R. Hayden, M. D.,- Dear Sir: - I take pleasure in attesting to the efficacy of "Hay- den's" Compound Phosphorus Pills; they are unapproachable and far in advance of any advertised remedy for diseases of the nerve centres. I have used a few boxes of your Pills, mostly in a. case of nervous derangement of a peculiar character, attended with a loss of consciousness, periodically, and a suspension of the functions, temporarily, of animal life in a young lady. The case cannot be classified nor described. She has been subjected to the general round of treatment for nervous complaints without benefit. She is a bright, intelligent young lady; has been taking the Pills with a good deal of regularity for the last four or five months, and thinks she is much benefited by their use, having had her nervous spells less frequently and in a modified and milder form.' D.,- My Dear Sir : - Enclosed find four dollars for two hundred of your Compound Phosphorus Pills. The demand for them is increasing, commensurate with the knowledge of the valuable medicinal proper- ties which they contain. The warm, firm grip of the hand which I receive from those who from divers causes have been almost, and in some instances quite, incapacitated for business from nervous prostra- tion, is of itself a great pleasure to me; and the warm, earnest com- mendation bestowed upon the Pills for their renewed health; for the tone and vigor given to their systems with the restoration of their virile powers, and the exclamation I am a man again; also that no money could tempt me to be without them, is not only of frequent occurrence, but is well calculated to swell in the true physician's breast emotions which language fails to describe. Respectfully, yours truly, H. L. WELLS, M. D. Grovesport, Ohio. W. R. Hayden, M. D.,- Dear Sir:- Please send me, by return mail, two hundred of your Compound Phosphorus Pills. For nervous prostration from whatever cause they are indeed a most excellent Pill. Very truly yours, H. L. CHANY, M. D. Dr. W. R. Hayden, - Dear Sir: - Having used the Phosphorus Pills manufactured by the New York Pharmaceutical Co., at Bedford Springs, Mass. - Simple and Compound, mainly the former - some eighteen months with decided satisfaction, I feel it my duty, and my pleasure, as well, to certify to the fact. Setting out in life with an inheritance from my mother of a very frail constitution, and subsequently overtasked by thirty years of sedentary habits, under a heavy pressure of finance and correspond- ence, several times obliged to abdicate my post for months, and lastly for years, seeking relief in perfect freedom from care and responsibil- ity, and, as far as was possible, from mental labor. I have during these experiences, sought and tested many prescribed remedies, usually to little or no purpose. About a year and a half since, I commenced using these Pills, one a day - but subsequently two- noting carefully the effects on the stomach, as well as on the mental organs. All fears as to the former were soon dissipated, observing the directions. The sustenance supplied to the latter was immediately perceptible, nor have they ever sensibly lost their power. To make sure no unfavorable results upon the system would follow their use, I have several times abandoned them for days or weeks, and in no case has the reaction carried me back to the starting point. Though a reaction was experienced in each case, I have speedily recovered much of the power I seemed temporarily about to lose. Fortified by my 32 experience, I confidently recommend their use to any whose thinking faculties from any cause refuse to do their bidding. They furnish more and better aliment to those faculties than 1 have discovered elsewhere. Very respectfully, C. W. KELLOGG, Of the firm of Peter Kellogg & Co., 110 John St., N. Y. New York. W. R. Hayden, M. D.,- Dear Sir : - Please send me 2000 of your incomparable Compound Phosphorus Pills immediately, and greatly oblige, Yours, &c., E. B. FOOTE, M. D. Howell, Mich. W. R. Hayden, M. D.,- Dear Sir: - I am delighted with the Phosphorus Pills, and would rather pay twice their price than be without them. I have used them myself, and have been able to perform double the amount of labor that I should have done were it not for them. Yours, &c., W. L. WELLS, M. D. Meriden, Ct. Dr. Hayden,- Dear Sir : - I have used your Compound Phosphorus Pills the past six months in a number of cases of Anaphrodisia, and in physical and nervous weakness caused by protracted influences injurious to the vital economy, and have been very much pleased with their effect. I have also used them with much benefit in inflammation of the prostrate gland, and in affections of the spinal cord. I have used Phosphorus with Sugar of Milk, Glycerine, Sulphuric Ether, and Alcohol, also Phosphoric Acid, but I think your preparation of Phosphorus in fat far preferable to others. Respectfully, CHAS. H. S. DAVIS, M. D. Taunton, Mass. Dr. Hayden, - Dear Sir: - You ask my experience with the Phosphorus Pills. I think them excellent - almost marvelous - in their action; have used them all long ago. I have not time to specify particulars, but can recommend them as super-excellent in nervous debility. J S. ANDREWS, M. D. DR. J. TAIT, of Meridan, Conn., writes us. of a severe case of spermatorrhoea cured by the use of the Phosphorus Pills. Professor HAMMOND, of the Bellevue Medical College, New York, late Surgeon-General of the United States Army, and the Hon. J. C. V. Smith, M. D., late professor of Anatomy, in the New York Medical College, speak very highly of the effects of Phosphorus in various cases. 33 Dr. D. EUJARDIN BEAUMETZ, of the Hospital de la Pitie, Paris, concludes, after an elaborate study of the action of phosphorus in locomotor ataxis, that - 1. Phosphorus appears to have a favora- ble influence in progressive locomotor ataxia. 2. Phosphorus acts as an excitant and as a tonic to the nervous system. It returns to the nervous tissue an indispensable element. 3. The administration of Phosphorus should be commenced in small doses, one milligramme (about 1-60 of a grain) and increased gradually until the dose of one centigramme (1-6 of a grain) is reached. The administration should cease when digestive troubles supervene. -Bulletin General de Ther- apeutique, Jan. 15, Feb. 29, March 18, 1868. Pulaski, N. Y. W. R. Hayden, M. D.,- Bear Sir:- Enclosed you will find one dollar for another bottle of your Compound Phosphorus Pills. I have been for years afflicted with sick-headache every few days, but since I commenced taking your pills have escaped entirely. J. N. BETTS, M. D. Dr. Betts is an eminent surgeon, and extensively known in Western New York. Unity, Maine. New York Pharmaceutical Co.- Gents: - Please send me for the enclosed, one hundred Compound Phosphorus Pills. I had some of your Pills last summer, and they gave me great satisfaction. Yours, very truly, AUSTIN THOMAS, M. D. Orient Springs, Amherst, Mass. W. R. Hayden, M. D.,- Bear Sir : - Your letter of the 18th instant, notifying me that you had filled our last order for Compound Phosphorus Pills, also that you should be pleased to know the result of our experience with them is at hand. I think the results show for themselves by our continued orders upon your house for them. Probably there is no institution in this country where there are so many of them used, as in this. 1 am free to say that in lapse of memory, vertigo, mental derangements, impotency, and vital exhaustion, these pills have no equal. We are continually using them in these terrible difficulties, and cannot speSk in too high jjraise of their efficacy, as many patients cured at the Orient Institute show. Very truly yours, G. H. RHODES, M. D. P. S. You can make any use you please of this letter. G. H. R. 102 East Twenty-third Street, New York. W. R. Hayden, M. D.,- I take great pleasure in adding my testimonial to the many you already have in favor of your Compound Phosphorus Pills. After an attack of paralysis, in March last, I used the Compound Phospho- rus Pills of other manufacturers with little or no effect; but after taking yours for a short time I began to notice a decided improvement in my symptoms. In short, I attribute my rapid convalescence to 34 their constant use, and would not now be without them under any consideration. Yours, very truly, ROBERT A. GUNN, M. D. The above testimonial is one of great value, coming, as it does, from a man of distinction in the profession as a surgeon, author and teacher. Dr. Gunn is at present Professor of Surgery in the United States Tribune Medical College, of New York City, editor of "The Medi- cal," and author of several valuable works on Surgery and Medicine. Woonsocket, R. I. W. R. Hayden, M. D., - Dear Sir:- Please send me by return mail two phials of your Compound Phosphorus Pills. I think they have been decidedly beneficial to my wife, who has taken nearly all those I had from you. Yours truly, WM. T. THURSTON, M. D. 116 Court Street, Boston. W. R. Hayden, M. D.,- Dear Sir: - Having employed your Compound Phosphorus Pills for the past five years «in my practice with the most gratifying results, particularly in cases of paralysis, nervous prostration, and nervous disorders generally, I take great pleasure in commending them to the profession as possessing more than ordinary merit in all cases where thfere is a loss of nerve force, and a general breaking down of the mental and physical system. Were it necessary I could cite important cases. Very truly yours, J. D. MASON, M. D. For 24 years Dr. Mason has had an extensive family and general practice in Boston and vicinity, and is widely known as one of the most skillful physicians in New England. ROBERT FARLEY, Esq., Stock Broker, Boston, Mass., was prostrated by a sudden shock of paralysis in 1873, which deprived him of the use of his superior extremites. His physicians prescribed the Compound Phosphorus Pills with success, and at the present time he has free use of his hands and arms, and has recovered his ordinary health. • FOHMUDTE. The SIMPLE Phosphorus Pill consists of the one-hundredth of a grain of phosphorus in suet, coated with our Soft Coating, which will immediately dissolve in the stomach, and is an important desideratum. The COMPOUND Phosphorus Pill contains one-hundredth of a grain of Phosphorus, and one-quarter of a grain of Nux Vomica pulvis, coated in the same manner as the Simple. 35 We also make the Simple and Compound Phosphorus Pills contain- ing the sixtieth of a grain of phosphorus, or of any desired strength or combination. Physicians writing for the Phosphorus Pills, will please be particu- lar to state the kind and strength of Pill required. GENERAL DIRECTIONS. Give one pill three times a day about half an hour after each meal, but never on an empty stomach. Put up in bottles of 100 pills. Dispensed by all druggists, or they will be sent on receipt of price, by the N. Y. P. Co., Bedford Springs, Mass. Price $1.00 a hundred. By the thousand $7.50 when the order is not for less than one thousand. PHOSPHORUS AS A REMEDIAL AGENT. It is rarely in the history of medicine that medical men have expressed such unanimity of opinion in regard to the success of any one remedy as they have in relation to the Compound Phosphorus Pills, made after Dr. Hayden's formula, which we first had the honor to present to the profession. The most eminent physicians in Europe and in this country have endorsed the merits of this preparation of Phosphorus with Nux Vomica, and medical journals are filled with eulogistic articles detailing experiences with and narrating cases cured by this most potent remedial agent. The treatment of all nervous disorders, which heretofore have been simply palliative by the employment of that class .of medicines denominated nervines, has been changed from the abortive, by supply- ing to the brain the constitutents of nerve force, which are always deficient in all cases of nervous depression. The Bromides of Potassa and Ammonium and the Chloral Hydrate so extensively employed by many practitioners as nerve tonics and sedatives, are fast being abandoned as unreliable, and as rather tending to aggravate other forms of disease than to cute. The excessive mental activity of the American people exhausts their nervous and vital forces, hence we have a frightful increase of Sudden Deaths, Paralysis, Paraplegia, Hemiplegia, Chorea, Neuralgia, Angina Pectoris, Nervous Exhaus- tion, Mental Depression, and a general wasting and breaking down of the system. Unfortunately all manufacturers and pharmacists who prepare the Compound Phosphorus Pills do not make them 36 strictly according to the original formula of Dr. Hayden, as his method requires much more labor, and does not make quite as handsome a pill when made with suet as with some harder excipient, a very small consideration as compared with the increased value of the pill when properly prepared. Physicians prescribing the Compound Phosphorus Pills should be assured that they are rightly compounded, for it is important that the phosphorus should be most thoroughly incorporated with beef suet, for which it has a special affinity and readily unites. From the suet the phosphorus is slowly taken into the circulation, without causing irritation, imparting new life and vigor to the whole body. As a nerve tonic, we have no other remedy that will fill its place, giving strength and pow er to the whole nervous system. While it invigorates, it also acts as a gentle sedative giving quiet and warmth without exciting or depressing the heart's action. In cases where there is great mental tax, as with most professional men, merchants, writers, book-keepers, etc, the brain is rapidly exhausted of phos- phorus, which is the most important constitutent, the head becomes hot, thought is confused or excitable and erratic, the temper irascible, and imaginary evils haunt the mind, and life is a burden. In nervous depression the superior and inferior extremeties become cold and clammy. Phosphorus is our best known aphrodisiac imparting strength and power to the sexual system, hence its great value in Impotency and Spermatorrhoea, cases which are exceedingly numerous and alarmingly on the increase, from venereal abuse and excesses, and our h'ot-house modes of living. For nervous headache and neuralgia, and the want of sleep, we must look to phosphorus for our most effective remedy. It is a safe and reliable remedy in skillful hands, when properly prepared according to the original formula. In the many thousand cases treated by Dr. Hayden, he has never had any unpleasant effects follow its administration. In support of our views in regard to the therapeutical effects of phosphorus, we quote the remarks of Dr. Routh before the London Medical Society, April 27th, 1874. He said - "the effects of phos- phorus, which were those of a stimulant in small doses, sedative, and producing a pleasant sensation of warmth, relieving neuralgia, and effective against certain obstinate skin diseases eczema and acne, and he thought it retarded the progress of cancer; and it was also an aphrodisiac, and appeared to improve the mental qualities if deterio- rating." In all cases of Pulmonary Consumption, phosphorus is deficient in the system of the patient, and they should be put on small doses of phosphorus in pill form, and the addition of a table-spoonful of fresh cream three times a day immediately after taking the pill, will be found of great advantage. HAYDEN'S Viburnum Compound Has induced several unscrupulous parties to imitate it as closely as prudent, and to state from the very first appearance of their advertise- ments the great favor and wonderful success of their remedy in the hands of the Medical Profession-when in fact, no physician had ever heard of, seen or prescribed it previous to the appearance of their advertisement. We desire, therefore, to caution the Profession not to be deceived by such- statements and false claims which are made to deceive. Write your prescriptions so positive that no apothecary will take the liberty to substitute some other preparation instead of the one written for, as is sometimes the case. We also desire to repeat what we have already said in these pages, viz: - THE VIBURNUM COMPOUND of Dr. Hayden is an original formula, and is prepared exclusively by The New York Pharmaceuti- cal Company-that it has been before, the Profession for the past twenty years, and that we can present more genuine testimonials from medical men in its favor than can be produced for any other five special remedies made in this country.
