Joseph Clark was a native of Scotland, and a resident of Cincinnati from the year 1823 till his death at the age of seventy-six years, which event occurred in this city July 1, 185S. He was a lover of nature, and an indefatigable collector of specimens in the several departments of natural history. He was one of the founders of the Western Academy of Natural Sciences, and was the author of a " Catalogue of Flowering Plants and Ferns, observed in the vicinity of Cincinnati," which was adopted and published by the Academy in 1852. At his death his extens- ive cabinets and herbarium passed into the hands of a relative, and were at length deposited in the Cincinnati Female Seminary, where they still remain. The vicissitudes which that institution encountered in 1860-1 prevented the consummation of the plans of the proprietors, Messrs. Burrowes and Sayler, which embraced a scientific arrangement of the heterogeneous accumulation, gathered from various sources, which crowded their beautiful Museum Hall. When I entered the Seminary, in February, 1862, I found chaos reigning in the domain of Science. Nothing was available as a means of illustration in my department save a choice collection of fossils and a small mineralogical cabinet. In the midst of abounding wealth famine was inevitable, through lack of classification. With a resolute will, I entered single-handed upon the herculean task of making these treasures available to science. I selected the herbarium as that portion of the work which in midwinter was most easy ot approach, and at once set about collecting it Packages, boxes, and cases were sent up to my laboratory day after day, as successive forays discovered their hiding-places, till the number swelled to thirty or more. The work proper then commenced; during three years I have labored patiently and faithfully upon it in my leisure hours, and it is only now, in my fourth Summer vacation, that I have finished the classification and arrangement of this Herbarium. The plants, for the most part, had been named, but named according to the nomenclature of thirty years ago. Hence the necessity for a careful study of synonyms and a critical and laborious examination of individual specimens for the purpose of effecting the numerous nomenclatural changes which the advance of science rendered necessary. No attempt at classification, according to the natural system, had been made, except in one 4 package.* The partial lists of plants which were found scattered through the collection were alphabetical. The whole mass was carefully opened, the plants identified, as far as possible, with existing enumerations just referred to, classified, culled, (duplicates preserved,) and finally arranged, in labeled sheets of uniform size, under their respective genera and orders, and the whole placed in a convenient herbarium case, where it is now in complete readiness for reference and study. This Catalogue is printed with a view of assisting the student and traveler in such reference and study, and if it shall serve this purpose, the labor its preparation has cost will be amply rewarded. Rev. G. M. Maxwell, D. D., the present proprietor and principal of the Sem- inary, proposes to make his building a pleasant resort for those interested in scientific pursuits, and will doubtless extend a welcome to all such who may choose to visit it. There lias been another incentive, aside from my love of science, which has nerved me in my task. It is a desire, prompted by my pride as a Western woman, that the natural sciences should find a home in this beautiful Western city of ours. There was a time—the time, indeed, which this Herbarium repre- sents—when the prospect was flattering for a brilliant future for Cincinnati in this respect. Not a few gentlemen, learned and enthusiastic, were numbered in the literary coterie of the city. In the department, of botany were found Dr. Daniel Drake, Dr. John Locke, Dr. John L. Riddell, Thomas G. Lea, Dr. Joseph Frank, Milo G. Williams, Joseph Clark, and Robert Buchanan, the last of whom alone remains to represent to the present generation the urbanity and scientific knowledge of his associates./ These gentlemen found hearty co- laborers in a similar circle in Lexington, Kentucky, where resided Dr. C. W. Short, C. S. Rafinesque, H. H. Eaton, and other Professors of the Transylvania University. They were frequently visited by travelers, gentlemen of science sent by their respective governments to explore the wealth of the Western world, and incited by these and by a generous rivalry with each other, they wrought nobly in the common cause. We have mementos of their labor in Dr. Drake's "Picture of Cincinnati," Cincinnati, 1815; Riddell's "Synopsis of the Flora of the Western States," Cincinnati, 1835, and a "Supplementary Catalogue of Ohio Plants," by the same, Cincinnati, 1836; Short's "Catalogue of the Native Phasnogamous Plants and Ferns of Kentucky," Lexington, 1833,; and a "Catalogue of the Plants of Cincinnati, collected by Thomas G. Lea" Philadelphia, 1849, the last of which embraces five hundred cryptogamous plants. But these pioneers are no longer with us, and the absorbing interests of business and material wealth have engaged their successors, to the exclusion of all scientific pursuits, so that no movement which has the advancement of science for its end prospers in Cincinnati. The Western Academy of Natural Sciences exists but in name, and for several years its cabinets and library * A valuable contribution, whose labels bear the name of " G. \V. Kellogg." •) have not been accessible to the public. Regretting, as I do, this state of things, it has afforded me sincere pleasure to contribute my mite toward reviving the interest of the olden time. I have found my work womanly, secluded, en- nobling ; and I submit to educated women of this vicinity whether, since these pursuits fail through lack of patronage, they may not enter upon them, and, as they find opportunity, become workers in or patronesses of science to a degree which, in time, shall remove from our city the reproach which now rests upon it. Only the will is lacking: cultivated talent, wealth, and oppor- tunity are abundant. Some farther particulars, descriptive of the collection and explanatory of the plan pursued in the preparation of the following Catalogue, are deemed neces- sary. The American plants have been classified according to the Natural Sys- tem, as published by Prof. Gray in his " Manual of the Botany of the Northern United States," revised edition, 1857, and by Dr. Chapman in his "Flora of the Southern United States," I860. Synonyms have been noted upon labels placed in the species-sheets, but on account of their number it has not been thought best to cumber the Catalogue with them. A descriptive list of these, in manu- script, has been preserved. Lea, whose catalogue of the Cincinnati Flora is the most extensive one published, numbers seven hundred phaenogamous plants (species and varieties:) of these, Clark preserved nearly six hundred. I have deemed the identification of these, by the student, of sufficient importance to warrant introducing them to his notice, and have accordingly indicated them in the following pages by an asterisk. Some surprise may be expressed that not a few familiar plants are missing. It would have been easy .to have supplied these, but I have scrupulously guarded the collection from intrusion on my own part or that of others, preferring to make this Herbarium of Mr. Clark a corner- stone upon which others may build, and to which they may add, if they choose, in their own names, hereafter. The "Foreign Plants" will be found in the Appendix. The derivation of these is not without interest. The British Ferns were gathered by Mr. Clark himself, during a visit to his native land made during 1854-5. The contribu- tion of Mosses is from Dr. Greville, Edinburgh. A package of plants from New Zealand is from William Gourlie, Glasgow. The remainder seem to have been obtained from several collectors in Great Britain, and on the continent: two packages bear the imprint of Gouan, Montpelier, France. In the absence of any reliable Manual which embraced the countries represented by these plants, I decided upon the following arrangement. Taking Lindley's "Vegetable King- dom" as my guide, I classified the genera* under Natural Orders, and indicated the classification as explained in a note to be found on page 7. The labels accompanying these specimens for the most part wanted the names of authors, * Where a single genus occurred under an order which had no representative in the body of the work, and a closely allied order was represent.-d, the name of the genus has been transferred to the representative order for the sake of avoiding a multiplicity of Families in the Index to Her- barium Drawers. These cases are few, and will readily be discerned by the botanist. 6 and as no means were within my reach by which these might be supplied, I have unwillingly submitted many of them in this incomplete form. The New Zealand Plants being the only package of foreign phasnogamous plants in which the names of authors were uniformly given, I have inserted these, by way of dis- tinction. The cryptogamous plants are in better condition in this respect, but the whole Appendix will doubtless be found to be imperfect—plants repeating themselves under various names—so soon as it shall be submitted to the test of a standard Flora. I shall, however, have assigned these strangers a place in the Herbarium, and have thus made it easy to find them when the needed light shall appear to illumine what is now obscure. It remains only to acknowledge my indebtedness to the young ladies, mem- bers of my classes in Botany during the seasons of 1864 and 1865, for valuable assistance, rendered methodically and persistently throughout the term. If the recollection of this social work in the laboratory shall avail no farther than to link pleasantly together the recitations in the class-room and the adventures of Spring afternoons when with vasculum and trowel we rambled afar in search of "specimens," they have not denied themselves to assist me in vain. It affords me pleasure to mention my brother, Joseph T. Bodley, of Cincin nati, as the appreciative friend through whose generosity I am enabled to print this little work. To the few others who will appreciate this simple contribution to Western Botany, it is now submitted, not without the hope that it may prove the harbinger of other efforts in the same direction, made by women in the West.
