Out of darkness Schizophrenia, Catatonic -- therapy Psychotherapy Filmed in the Metropolitan State Hospital in Norwalk, California, this film is a record of three months in the life of one of the patients, known as Doris L. She suffers from catatonic schizophrenia and goes through multiple psychotherapeutic sessions to treat her illness. Life around the hospital is shown, including patients taking part in social activities as part of their treatment. Dr. William C. Menninger offers commentary on the developing story and other cases, and Orson Welles appears as The Reader, periodically reading passages from the book Philosophy of Insanity throughout the program.
