Food and Drug Administration Drug Approval Fraud -- prevention & control Advertising Product Surveillance, Postmarketing This film shows inspectors and officials of the US Food and Drug Administration working to enforce food and drug regulations and thus keep the population safe. It follows the work of one agent who is assigned to investigate a scam "medicine" called Elixirex. A man with diabetes dies, having stopped his insulin and taken Elixirex instead. Around the same time, an FDA official scanning ads for questionable treatments sees an ad for Elixirex and assigns an agent to follow up on it. The agent visits the mailing address listed in the ad, speaks to a woman there, and finds a makeshift lab in a backyard shed. He takes the necessary steps to shut down the operation. Cosmetics, foods, and other pseudo-drugs are shown as well, in an effort to educate the audience on the existence of dangerous compounds and on the efforts of the FDA to identify and regulate them.
