<dc:subject>Transvestism</dc:subject>
<dc:description>(Critical) Definitions and differential diagnosis of transsexualism and transvestism are presented in this unit. A clinical approach, which features comprehensive evaluation and management of the transsexual or transvestite from a supportive viewpoint, encouraging a continuation of the patient's cross-gender behavior is described. No consideration of any other theoretical approach to the understanding and treatment of these conditions is apparent. The psychopathology and psychodynamics underlying the difficulties are minimized. While interesting, this is an unstructured and excessively lengthy production. It is recommended with reservations for the use of the clinical trainee or practitioner in the fields of psychology, psychiatry, and social work.</dc:description>
<dc:description>In this program, Dr. Milton M. Berger and his co-host, Dr. Michael Carrera, interview Dr. Leah Schaefer, president of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sex. Definitions of transsexualism and transvestism are presented, followed by explanations about the origins, development, and prevalence of transvestism. The distinction is made between transsexuals, who believe they should be the opposite gender, and transvestites, usually heterosexual males who crossdress for sexual arousal. A clinical approach is described which features comprehensive evaluation and management of the transsexual or transvestite from a supportive viewpoint, encouraging a continuation of the patient’s crossgender behavior. The second half of the program focuses on transsexuals, including the practicalities of sex reassignment surgery.</dc:description>
