Palmer Howard, Osler's teacher and colleague at McGill University School, spent the summer of 1884 in Germany as a break from what Osler called, "the excessive drudgery of teaching". Osler was then nearing the end of his time as a professor at McGill Medical School and would soon move to Philadelphia. Jared Howard was then a demonstrator in anatomy at McGill..
