<dc:description>The study demonstrated that in mice a targeted mutation of the TRα thyroid hormone receptor that prevents it from binding thyroid hormone results in the same retardation of body growth and maturation of local cerebral glucose utilization as seen in cretinism produced by neonatal thyroidectomy whereas a corresplnding mutation in the TRβ thyroid hormone receptor has no such effects. This study demonstrates that thyroid binding to the TRα thyroid hormone receptor and not at all to the TRβ receptor is critical to the normal maturation of the brrain.</dc:description>
