<dc:description>Part of a series dedicated to highlighting advances in neurosciences and brain research, this lecture is part of Symposium VI: the Adaptable Brain, with Michael Merzenich, Ph.D. There is a sign-language interpreter translating his lecture. Merzenich's research examines changes in the brain that account for people's neuro-behavioral differentiations and the self-organization of the brain. Organization, or "learning," is something the brain does constantly, not something that begins and ends in adolescence. This is evidence of ongoing brain plasticity. Dr. Merzenich describes experiments with monkeys that help demonstrate this. One of the goals of his research is to learn more about physical and learning disorders in connection with cortico-plasticity.</dc:description>
