Hèroïsme de Soeur Julie, Gerbeviller 24 Aout 1914. Fuite Fuite Julie, Sister, 1854-1925. Nurses Nuns Military Personnel Courage World War I This postcard is one of a set that depicts the courage of Sister Julie, a French nun and nurse, in preventing the execution of a wounded French soldier under her care by a German soldier. On August 24, 1914, German troops withdrew from the city of Gerbéviller, commiting atrocities as they went, including executions and the burning of any intact buildings. In this postcard, a French soldier lies in bed, his head wrapped in bandages with a spot of blood. He looks up at Sister Julie, dressed in a black nun's habit. She appears to be ordering a German soldier, dressed in uniform with spiked helmet and sword, to leave the hospital. The German soldier looks down at the wounded French soldier. Although Sister Julie did exist and did show great heroism in the face of the German atrocities, it is not known whether the event depicted in this postcard actually occurred or was invented for propaganda purposes.
