Sawyer and his staff of the State Hygienic Laboratory in Hanford, California Typhoid Fever Public Health California Sawyer became director of the State Hygienic Laboratory in Berkeley in 1910. He and his staff were responsible for tracing disease epidemics and halting their spread when possible. Here they posed together after tracking down the source of a typhoid epidemic in Hanford.
