After studying art history in college and marrying the New York art dealer Paul Reinhardt, she became a knowledgeable collector herself. Over the course of the next three decades, she acquired works by Renoir, Matisse, and Miro, and built one of the premier private art collections in the country. She sold most of her collection in 1971 when she changed Manhattan homes, largely, she said, "because I wanted to be able to give away the money" to sponsor medical research. Columbia University.
