Medical debt in New York State: estimates for large cities and towns, state legislative districts, congressional districts, and other geographic areas
Medical debt in New York State: estimates for large cities and towns, state legislative districts, congressional districts, and other geographic areas
A previous Urban Institute analysis of February 2022 data from a random sample of deidentified consumer credit records in New York State found that an estimated 6 percent of consumers (representing approximately 740,000 adults) had medical debt in collections on their credit reports, and this share varied widely across the state’s economic regions, counties, and communities (Karpman et al. 2023). The analysis also found that within each region, communities of color and communities facing greater economic challenges generally had the highest rates of medical debt, and nearly half of consumers with medical debt owed $500 or more. In this supplemental brief, we provide a series of tables showing the estimated prevalence of medical debt across the following additional areas: (1) cities and towns with large populations (2) metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas (3) hospital referral regions (HRRs), a set of regional health care markets defined based on where patients are referred for tertiary medical care (4) state senate and assembly districts (5) congressional districts.
