This brief examines recent trends in the United States’ opioid crisis and patterns in drug overdose death rates from 2019 to 2021, representing the first years of the COVID-19 pandemic. Data showed that fentanyl overdoses soared and contributed to growing deaths from prescription opioids, methamphetamine, and cocaine.
