Advertisement - Abstract:
- This black and white illustrated postcard is a reproduction of the drawing Dope Bird by artist Tony Fitzpatrick. It was used to advertise his show at Adam Baumgold Fine Arts in 1996. It is a very detailed and imaginative black and white drawing with almost every space on the card covered. At the center is a large bird, reminiscent of a blue jay. It is surrounded by characters that are half human with tails and/or wings. There are buildings, trees, stars and other shapes. One half-human character is holding a rocket. At the top of the card is DOPE BIRD in an decorative oval and at the bottom in a box is SMACK DREAM. The handwritten text a the bottom of the card reads: At midnight the dope bird drops its load -- find the streets take a fly-ride -- the demons come crawling out. They take over the night. The dope bird is surrounded by half-remembered things -- the half-child ran from the city’s scrap heap. The wounded monsters blend in the night. The white magic of dope. Every night is the 4th of July. The dope bird brings numbness and dries tears. The dope bird knows nothing. The city is dirty and dark and cold. The worst dreams of children live here. The dope bird watches like Nera. The children turn feral and unrepentant. Morning comes in nods.
