Abstract:
The United States Sanitary Commission, a civilian organization, sent physicians and others to inspect U.S. Army camps and hospitals during the Civil War, gathering data on camp and hospital conditions, health of the troops, and supplies needed. In December 1861, the USSC sent a report to the Secretary of War, including this tally of illness from disease and violence, comparing the American figures with those from the British casualties in the Crimean War (1852-54). The authors noted that disease disabled far more troops than did violence, in both conflicts.
