Zimbabwe - Abstract:
- Follows the life paths of two girls, Mary and Janet, living in a township in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). Janet is from a large family, her home is crowded and uncomfortable, and her mother is not able to give each child individual attention. There isn't enough food to go around. The parents argue over the situation. Janet tries to focus on her schoolwork while also looking after the smaller children. Mary comes from a family with just three children. The parents are shown as able to take a deeper interest in the schooling, health, and prospects of each child because they planned their family and limited the number of offspring. There is plenty of healthful food for each member of the family and the household is calm and well-managed. Mary completes her schooling and makes plans for college. Janet plans only to marry her boyfriend in order to escape her home. Janet becomes pregnant before getting married, and her boyfriend breaks off the relationship. Compared to Mary, she has few prospects for a successful life.
