Film begins with a profile of efforts to control parasitic infections among male coal-mine workers in western Sumatra, a region in Indonesia. The mining company in concert with the Ministry of Health conducted an overall health assessment of the miners and their families, leading to a program of preventive and acute care. Eighty percent of the miners were found to have hookworm infections, while many children had roundworm infections. Preventive health services evolved to include family planning in concert with programs to control infection. Field workers were trained and made visits to villagers' homes to treat illnesses, teach sanitation and hygiene, and offer birth control options. Includes a close look at the matrilineal society of the ethnic Minangkabau.
