- Abstract:
- This training film, produced by the Louisiana Association for Mental Health and the New Orleans Police Department, portrays policemen in various situations dealing with people who are in crisis. The majority of them are non-violent, such as elderly people with dementia, the mentally challenged, and people attempting or contemplating suicide. Because suicidal people tend to make repeated attempts, they are detained for their own safety and carefully monitored. A domestic disturbance involving a violent and threatening husband takes place, and the police must safely subdue the man and take him into custody. Special effort is taken to keep the man comfortable and reassured until he can receive proper medical care. Another situation is shown in which the officer approaches a violent man without adequate assistance.
