Popular Work - Abstract:
- Within the framework of a single case history study, this film identifies for boys and girls the major aspects of the common cold. Opening in a boy's bedroom, the first scene shows two boys about eleven years of age. Jim, who has a cold, sneezes at John. Since John is aware that colds can be spread through sneezes, he reprimands his friend. Jim does not believe that colds can be spread that way. We next see John two days later. He is beginning to feel the effects of a cold. His mother, Mrs Harrison, decides that she had better ask the family doctor to help convince John of the seriousness of a cold. After the doctor is very sure that the symptoms described by John's mother do not indicate a dangerous healthcondition, an appointment is made for John to come to the doctor's office. The film next depicts part of Dr. Chase's examination of John. After eliminating the possiblity of other diseases having symptoms like those of a common cold, the doctor concludes that John has a cold. Even after the diagnosis, John is not thoroughly convinced that a cold can be very serious, so Dr. Chase tells him of other possible infections that may come in on top of a cold including: sinus trouble, ear infections, and pneumonia. When John sees how serious the after-effects of a cold can be, he decides to discipline himself and stay in the house until his cold is definitely improved. He also makes sure to destroy all tissues or clothshe has used, since they will definitely contain the cold virus. In this way John shows that he has taken to heart the danger of cold contagion, and that he is truly interested in preventing the spreading of his cold to others.
