- Abstract:
- In this film, the symptoms and first aid treatment of heat exhaustion, sunstroke, and burns are presented. A sailor exhibiting the symptoms of heat exhaustion--weakness, dizziness, nausea, pale skin, profuse perspiration, clammy body, shallow breathing, weak pulse, unconsciousness, cramping of the abdominal, leg, and arm muscles--is attended by another sailor. The victim is moved to a cool place, kept in a lying position, and after he has come to, given sips of salt water to drink. Taking salt tablets during periods of profuse sweating is recommended. Heatstroke and sunstroke are caused by a derangement of the heat control mechanism of the body. The symptoms are exhibited by a sailor--pain in the head, nausea, dizzines, parched mouth, and dry skin. He should be taken to sick bay. If this is not possible, he should be moved to a cool place. A sailor is shown providing the proper treatment for a sunstroke victim. He pulls him into the shade, keeps him lying down, raises his head, loosens his clothes, and sponges his head and body with cold water. Speed is important. The sailor rubs the victim's limbs and trunk in the direction of the heart to aid circulation. When the victim comes to, he is given cold drinks and continued treatment. He is then put in a stretcher and taken to sick bay. The treatment of burns is also shown. A sailor smothers the burning pants leg of another sailor with a blanket, cutting off the air supply of the fire. The victim is kept warm and quiet to avert shock. Then the rescuer cuts away the clothing around the burn, not allowing anything to touch the burn itself except a dressing of sterile gauze. The patient is put on a stretcher and taken to sick bay. Shots include: sailors swabbing the decks of a ship.
