Abstract:
The film begins with a statement that the abandonment of prudery in recent years has made possible the teaching of human reproduction to "the adolescent and mature." The position and function of the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries is presented. With drawings, legends, and post-mortem specimens, the film traces human reproduction from ovulation through fertilization, segmentation, implantation, growth and maturity of the fetus, and enlargement of the uterus. The function of the umbilical cord is explained. A low-key selective breeding, eugenics pitch is made at the end of the film. Shots include: a drawing of a woman with the reproductive system superimposed; labeled drawings of the female reproductive system; a post-mortem female reproductive system with gloved hands manipulating the labeled tissues; animated drawings of ovulation, fertilization, maturation, size and look of the developing embryo in uterus; the growing fetus; drawings of relative human female size in infancy, childhood, adolescence, and maturity. Also shown are: a post-mortem 12 week fetus in situ in the uterus, probed and manipulated by gloved hands holding forceps; post-mortem fetuses, uterus, and umbilical cord are displayed in jars of preservative. The film ends with footage of a baby lying on a blanket, drinking a bottle, kicking, sitting up.
