Abstract:
This 1985 presentation by Dr. Bruce Hathaway gives an overview of AIDS beginning with a history of the disease, its initial discovery, and the identification of at-risk groups. Dr. Hathaway goes on to talk about ongoing developments in understanding the etiology of the disease, which is caused by human T-lymphotropic virus III (HTLV-III) (later renamed human immunodeficiency virus/HIV). Initially, it was thought that the identification of this virus would soon lead to an effective vaccine, but this turned out not to be the case. More details are given about at-risk groups, modes of transmission (including dispelling misconceptions about how this can occur), how the virus affects the body, tests used to identify seropostive patients, and the current spread of the disease. Projections are made on how far AIDS may spread in the near future and how it may be treated.
