- Abstract:
- This 1981 film is on the subject of child abuse, particularly the role of hospital staff in identifying abused children as they enter the emergency room setting and initiating treatment for the abuser. At Children's Hospital in Philadelphia, this is achieved by means of the SCAN (Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect) program. Some parents may bring their children in under false pretenses, claiming that the injuries have some cause other than abuse, a term called a "ticket of admission." Hospital staff must examine not only the injured child but also enquire about the family history to determine the likelihood of this. Physical examinations and lab studies may also yield evidence. If the hospital identifies a problem, it must report it to the appropriate children and youth services agency, which may recommend removal of the child from the parent's care until the parent can receive help. The potential causes of abuse are examined, and hospital staff strive to remain as objective and non-judgmental as possible, plus it is important not to make assumptions that can lead to a false report of child abuse. Social workers may interview parents to gain more insight into a situation and to provide support if needed.
